We're beginning to ramp up our press outreach and social media for the 11th Record Store Day. We're collecting quotes about what Record Store Day has meant to people at labels, pressing plants and other places, as well as to artists. We'd like to include quotes from stores as well. If you'd care to send us a quote (a few sentences or so is perfect) along with your store name and your position (Owner, Buyer, Clerk, etc. whatever you call what you do at a record store), we'd love it. We'll be using these in various places, possibly press releases, possibly social media, to promote the upcoming Record Store Day.

DR. OCTAGON PRE_ORDER 7" PROMOTION

NOTE: This title is not publicly announced and will not be publicly announced until 2/16. ANY LEAK OF THIS TITLE THAT CAN BE TRACED TO A RECORD STORE MEANS THAT RECORD STORE MAY NOT BE PART OF RECORD STORE DAY ANY LONGER.  They're being cool and coming up with unique things for you, and the nature of soliciting and coordinating physical things for physical stores means we have to have advance notice, and we're being trusted not to leak this.


Stores who sign up for this campaign will be given a 7” with two tracks from the album, and that will be given to the customer when they pre-order the new album. Itunes and Amazon pre-orders come with instant downloads of album tracks, and this is the physical way to do that. The idea here, as with other pre-order campaigns, is not necessarily to have exclusive music from the album, but to give those fans who prefer to pre-order physical product and shop at their local record store the same opportunity. Stores who sign up for this must be able to properly execute apre-order for the FULL LENGTH ALBUM of this. That means you’ll follow whatever procedures you like to do the pre-order, but you have to be able to sell the release in advance to your customer and have the scan of the album show up on street date of 4/6

THIS CAN NOT BE PUBLICLY ANNOUNCED UNTIL 2/16 WHEN THE NEW ALBUM IS ANNOUNCED. ANY LEAK OF THIS INFORMATION THAT CAN BE TRACED BACK TO A STORE IS CAUSE FOR THAT STORE TO NO LONGER PARTICIPATE IN RECORD STORE DAY. Any use of the 7" tools for this promotion other than their intended use is also cause for a store to no longer participate in Record Store Day.

RSD 2018 PROMOTIONAL TOOL KIT
Every year we work with labels/artists/distributors to create a variety of tools and pieces for stores to use as a sort of party favor during Record Store Day, we like to think of it as a Party In A Box. These can be samplers, singles, magazines, posters, buttons, t-shirts or whatever folks come up with and create. We do our best to come up with a really diverse, special collection of pieces. Then we put it all together in a kit and send it all to you in a big box(es). We also include Record Store Day vinyl banners and buttons, special bags created to hold RSD purchases, and usually a special goofy little surprise or two. We are increasingly involved in creating tools especially for this day as well, not just with advising our label and distribution partners, and this year we are creating a few things ourselves which you'll find in the kit.

THIS PROMOTIONAL TOOL KIT IS IN NO WAY REQUIRED OF YOUR STORE. The money we get from our sponsors every year goes toward running the site, our PR efforts, and everything else it takes to organize, maintain, grow and market Record Store Day and our mission to drive traffic to and awareness of your stores. When it comes to the promotional tools, we do ask that any store that wants to receive them pay $150 (*$153 if paying via credit card, due to merchant fees) PER LOCATION to help cover all the costs of creation, shipping tools to be packed, organizing, packing, and shipping the kits back out.  Last year we increased the per location cost, only a little, for the first time ever, as we began to produce more and more of the Kit tools ourselves. That amount remains the same for 2018.

Let’s proactively address some of those questions you’re gonna have:

WE CAN’T TELL YOU WHAT IS GOING TO BE IN THE KIT because we don’t know. We’re still working to find out what everything will be, how many we’ll have and all the other details. When we know everything, we’ll contact those stores who have opted in and tell them, before things ship. We’ll also get you artwork where we can, to help you promote these pieces to your customers.

NO, YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO THIS TO BE A RECORD STORE DAY STORE This is an extra, additional thing and you don’t have to sign up. You can still be listed on the site as a participating store, and your events and updates you put on the site will show up just like everyone else’s.

THIS IS NOT THE SAME THING AS THE PLEDGE That’s totally separate, and it’s addressed in other notes from Record Store Day. You DO have to have signed the Pledge in order for us to process your order for these tools. (See lower in this email for instructions on doing this, and make sure you've done that first).

Again, we have to say: THERE IS NO OBLIGATION TO PAY THIS IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN RECORD STORE DAY. This only applies if you want to receive these promotional tools. If you do want to receive these tools, read below:

DEADLINE: We must have received your payment and your information no later than March 1. The ability to pay via Credit Card ends at midnight on February 25, but if you’re paying by check it must be postmarked no later than 2/28 and we must have it no later than March 1. NOTHING WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THAT DATE. CHECKS RECEIVED AFTER THAT DATE WILL BE RETURNED.

INFORMATION. There is a form HERE that needs to be filled out and returned. ALL INFORMATION ON THIS FORM NEEDS TO BE FILLED OUT. If it’s not, we won’t be able to include your store. Please go over it a couple of times and make sure you’ve filled it out. If you’re paying via Credit Card, then you still need to send this in. If you’re paying via check, please include this form with your check. We want to make sure that the tools you’re getting are the ones that will make the most sense for your customers and for you and this form helps us do that. AGAIN, THE DOWNLOAD FORM IS HERE

If you are paying this way, there are things to keep in mind:

WE CAN NOT AMEND YOUR ORDER AFTER THE FACT. PLEASE DO THIS CAREFULLY. WE WOULD NEED TO CANCEL AN ORDER AND START OVER IF YOU HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH IT.

THE PLEDGE

Is now open to sign. Instructions on how to do that, and why to do that, and when to do it by, are below.  IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SIGNED THE PLEDGE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO SIGN IT AGAIN. IF YOU'RE NOT SURE, GO LOOK UP YOUR STORE ON RECORDSTOREDAY.COM AS A CUSTOMER WOULD. DO YOU SEE A PLEDGE SYMBOL ON YOUR PAGE? YOU HAVE SIGNED THE PLEDGE. 

In the past, we have had complaints from stores and customers about stores who do not treat the release or the customers with respect—who gouge the customers, break street date or hold back product to sell online. In the world of social media, this has a very good chance of injuring the reputation of both Record Store Day and record stores as a whole, so we implemented THE PLEDGE, and the elements of it apply to Black Friday as well. This Pledge has a list of simple things we ask stores to agree to do or not do, and stores must sign it in order to be on the list we provide distributors and one-stops as APPROVED TO ORDER RSD PRODUCT. No store who is not on this list, even if they are on the recordstoreday.com website, will have their orders processed. As an approved Record Store Day store, you have the right to read and sign The PledgeTHE DEADLINE FOR DOING SO IS THURSDAY MARCH 1.

Instructions for doing that are HERE: 

TO SIGN THE PLEDGE YOU NEED TO LOG IN TO YOUR STORE’S ACCOUNT ON WWW.RECORDSTOREDAY.COM The login button is in the top right of the site, and your store’s login is the email address you used to register with RSD, and the password is whatever you set it up to be. If you can’t recall your password, you can use Password Recovery during the login process. When you log in, you should see something like the image below.

Because we have to provide a final list of stores to the distributors and one-stops before their solicitation and allocation processes begin, we do have a hard and fast deadline for signing The Pledge. THAT DEADLINE IS THUR SDAY MARCH 1. IF YOUR PLEDGE HAS NOT BEEN SIGNED BY THAT DATE YOU WILL NOT BE ON THE LIST OF APPROVED STORES GIVEN TO DISTRIBUTORS. There will be another opportunity to sign the Pledge before Black Friday 2018.
