Record Store Day would like to acknowledge the longstanding tradition of making music for causes. Of the 150 great new titles set for release on Black Friday, we would like to spotlight just a few charitable works to become available exclusively at independently owned record stores in the US on November 25th.
Celebrated organization The Jed Foundation, a mental health advocacy group benefiting young people, their schools and their families, will sponsor The Geto Boys Mind Playing Tricks release. JED promotes social connectedness and implements strategic planning for young adults, working closely with communities and schools to create safeguards for individuals at risk.
The Geto Boys’ Mind Playing Tricks will be released on 12” vinyl through the RapAlot label First released in 1991 and not reissued since, the forthcoming RSD Black Friday release will offer both clean and explicit version of single, as well as an instrumental version pressed on green vinyl. The release seeks to promote awareness of mental health issues and the proceeds will benefit The JED Foundation, working to promote emotional health and suicide prevention among college and university students.
Says JED Executive Director and CEO, John MacPhee, “The Geto Boys not only pioneered the hip hop world - they positively contributed to mental health conversations through a medium that resonates with the younger generation. Music is a powerful way to communicate important messages, and what more important topic to discuss with someone than their well being.”
Record Store Day Black Friday will also see the release the Lone Survivor soundtrack on Black Friday featuring a collaboration between Texas post-rock band Explosions in the Sky and film composer Steve Jablonsky. This soundtrack will be available for the first time on a 180 gram double LP in a gatefold jacket, and portion of the proceeds will go to The Journey Home Project, which connects donors to veterans organizations that do the most good.
Says Record Store Day Co-Founder Carrie Colliton. "On Veteran's Day, this past Friday, there was a lot of attention on the situation that thousands of men and women find themselves in when transitioning from the military back to "normal" life. Groups like The Journey Home Project, started by musician Charlie Daniels, pay attention to it year-round. I spend my year shining a light on independent record stores, but Veterans' issues are really personally important to me and I'm so happy that those two things are coming together in this exclusive release. And music from Explosions in the Sky to boot? Icing on the cake for me.”
