RECORD STORE DAY IS 10 YEARS OLD!
LIST OF OFFICIAL RSD 2017 TITLES DROPS TODAY!

Saturday, April 22nd marks the 10th Anniversary of Record Store Day, our now annual hootenanny dedicated to record culture, record lovers, record makers and most of all, the amazing record stores that make it all possible. That's a whole decade’s worth of a unique annual event whose purpose has been to bring folks together in support of those essential elements that make independent record stores real and thriving epicenters of their communities.

While RSD can claim a substantial role in kicking up the vinyl revolution, the event has really been about THE STORES. Record Store Day has traditionally appointed artist ambassadors such as Chuck D., Iggy Pop, Dave Grohl, Jack White and, of course, this year’s delegate, St. Vincent, to help spread the word in the service of notable outposts around the country and around the globe, priming a steady stream of incredible product into and out of their doors.

Our ‘Tin Anniversary’ is no different in that respect, and dare we say it, perhaps even a little bit of a step up...

Let's start with honoring our recently departed icons as Record Store Day sees the release of two David Bowie titles: Cracked Actor (Live, Los Angeles, ’74. previously unreleased live recording from Los Angeles on 5th September, 1974, a pivotal gig in the transition between the Diamond Dogs tour and the Philly Dogs tour; and BOWPROMO (GEM Promo LP), a reproduction of one of Bowie’s earliest demo promos.

Record Store Day also sees mulitple special 12” Maxi-Singles from none other than Prince, a man who loved and visited his local record store on Record Store Day and year-round, as well as a 7" picture disc of "Little Red Corvette" b/w "1999". A CD reissue of legendary songwriter Leon Russell’s Guitar Blues is also on the list of Official Titles, and some of the earliest music from Sharon Jones comes on a funk gospel 7”.

Record Store Day will also see the release of Like A Drunk In A Midnight Choir - Record Store Day Celebrates the Music of Leonard Cohen, a brilliant tribute album curated by Fingerprints Records owner  Rand Foster and set to drop as one of Record Store Day’s first actual label releases! The album features Joseph Arthur, Matt Costa, Leanna Skoda, Glen Hansard and a host of others doing justice to choice cuts from the great bard’s catalog, and proceeds benefit Pablove.

Record Store Day’s second label release is David Crosby & the Lighthouse’s RSD 10” Anniversary Record (appropriated named)- Four songs performed on NPR's World Café on December 8^th, the recording features David Crosby, Michael League (Snarky Puppy), Becca Stevens and Michelle Willis.

Notable store-owned label releases include Permanent Records’ Frankie and The Witch Fingers’ Sidewalk on 12” vinyl; a moe. Live album, a reissue of Peter Tosh’s Legalize It!, (with scratch & sniff inner-sleeve) and A Bronx Tale Soundtrack, first time ever on vinyl from Brookvale Records; Colemine Records’ Soul Slabs, Volume 1; author Ken Kesey’s The Acid Test on Jackpot Records; releases from acclaimed ‘90s bands The Veldt and Bettie Serveert on Schoolkids Records; Crooked Beat’s Recutting The Crap, Vol 1, a collector’s delight of various artists’ versions of songs from The Clash; Graveface Records’ release of the hidden shoegaze gem from Blind Mr. Jones, and a split NULL/GT 7” from Seasick Records, benefitting Girls Rock Birmingham.

For the kids, we mean the little ones, Fisher-Price joins the party with Thomas & Friends, Steam, Rattle, and Roll Thomas, a musical adventure with an immersive story featuring everyone’s favorite train. There’s also a picture disc with a Lin-Manuel Miranda=penned tune from Moana, and the aptly named Children’s Album from Johnny Cash.  Bedtime stories older folks may pay attention to make an appearance on Stories for Ways and Means, a vinyl collection of narrations of the tales from the book of the same name, curated by Waxploitation Records as a ‘literary mixtape” of stories written by Nick Cave, Jim James, Frank Black, Allison Mosshart and more. The vinyl RSD 2017 release includes narration by Zach Galifanakis, Danny Devito, Nick Offerman, King Krule, D.R.A.M., and more.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit stepped into Nashville studio Welcome to 1979 for their live covers EP for Record Store Day, and Townes Van Zandt’s Live at Austin City Limits session from 1976 also sees a release, as does the Hammersmith Odeon London ’75 show from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (the band’s first concert outside the US). Drive By Truckers hit a certain studio for their Electric Lady Sessions RSD 2017 piece, and Shooter Jennings took his dad’s band on the road, and Live, an exclusive RSD 2017 release, is the official document of that historic tour. Sting’s Live at the Bataclan chronicles the night music returned to the Paris nightclub, one year later.

Hip-hop comes into play with an actual “children’s book” interpretation of Slick Rick’s classic The Great Adventures Of… Children’s Book (puffy cover and all!), the early years of the collaboration between Frank n Dank and Jay Dilla on The Jay Dee Tapes, something special from Run The Jewels, a look back at Notorious B.I.G.’s Born Again, and a picture disc from Danny Brown.

Some now-regular Record Store Day series’ continue to roll into record stores, like the Side By Side series of 7”s which this year includes Tegan and Sara/The Regrettes, The Flamin’ Groovies/Dylan Gardner and Talking Heads/Wildling.  Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione sat down again with his friend from Sony Legacy, Adam Block, for some beer and music and the third edition of Music To Drink Beer To, and record store staff from around the country dove back into the Sun Records vaults and pulled out Really Rock ‘Em Right: Sun Records Curated by Record Store Day, Vol. 4 .

Anticipated new music comes from Spoon (Hot Thoughts Record Store Day 12”), The War On Drugs (Thinking of a Place 12”), Pokey LaFarge (“Riot in the Streets”/”Better Man Than Me 7”), The Magpie Salute (the latest from Rich Robinson) (“Coming Home”/”Glad and Sorry” 10”), among others.

The Alarm’s Mike Peters lays out his life and career in the documentary The Man In The Camo Jacket, and the soundtrack (with music that spans that same timeline) is a vinyl exclusive for Record Store Day. Iron & Wine also takes a look back at their music’s past for Archive Series Vol. 3.
