One of the most famous scenes in popular cinema is without a doubt the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 masterpiece Psycho. The soundtrack of screeching violins, violas, and cellos was an original all-strings piece by composer Bernard Herrmann, titled "The Murder". 

Hitchcock insisted that Bernard Herrmann write the score for Psycho despite the composer's refusal to accept a reduced fee for the film's lower budget. The resulting score is perhaps Herrmann's most spectacular Hitchcock achievement. Hitchcock was pleased with the tension and drama the score added to the film, later remarking "33% of the effect of Psycho was due to the music." 

Herrmann used the lowered music budget to his advantage by writing for a string orchestra rather than a full symphonic ensemble, contrary to Hitchcock's request for a jazz score. He thought of the single tone color of the all-string soundtrack as a way of reflecting the black-and-white cinematography of the film.

Unlike most of the London-based, middle class art school types adopting the blues, the Animals came from a tough working class area of Newcastle. Despite their somewhat scruffy appearance and what appeared to be homemade haircuts, their pure gutsy performances went down a storm around the UK. This album taken from live sessions broadcast in 1964 finds the group in fine fettle and features recordings from that first successful year when they sounded so fresh and exciting. Here they are playing blues standards by the likes of Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker and Chuck Berry, just like they did when they cut their debut self-titled LP that same year. The Vicar’s assistant Punk Sanderson, is the famous record that can “vary each time you play it”- “variofonics”, as The Vicar called it. Trust us. In the early 1990s, a dark force began to rise in Los Angeles, fueled by classic ‘80s New York boom-bap and equally inspired by evil-tinged rock groups from the 1970s, like Black Sabbath. Just like that era of Los Angeles itself, pre-Riots and pre-The Chronic, Cypress Hill – producer and DJ Muggs with main MC B-Real and his lyrical partner Sen Dog – brought the city’s bubbling unrest to the surface, bathed in weed smoke and exploring injustices done to the underclass by both the Police State and the Government.

Technically a “Double A-Side,” Cypress Hill’s first single, from 1991, took a minute to penetrate the rap scene at large. Once it took hold, though, there was no turning back. Part of the delay may have been the aural dichotomy shown here – “The Phunky Feel One” is a ridiculously funky groover, laced with liquid flows that might not create a full-on party vibe, but certainly brought listeners to the brink of the dancefloor. The flip, which eventually became the group’s breakthrough (thanks in part to its use in the climax to the film “Juice”), was a claustrophobic exploration of the gang lifestyle and mindset that was prevalent in the LA of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. “Here is something you can’t understand,” the chorus snarled, “How I could just kill a man.”

According to group members, “Phunky Feel” was their record label’s choice for the A-Side, and “Kill A Man” was the song they themselves wanted to show the world with their first shot. No matter which way you slice it, the single showed an impressive range in just two songs – a complexity which would soon be fully exposed with the group’s debut LP later that year.

This limited edition Record Store Day release is a black vinyl 7-inch recreation of the original 12”, featuring the single’s classic artwork on a printed 7” jacket, plus a special matte black 2nd outer sleeve, embossed with the seminal skull design.

Hailing from New Jersey, The Everymen are a straight ahead rock band that comes out sounding like the Stooges and Bruce Springsteen. On this 7" EP they are paying tribute to the Canadian rock band Eric's Trip who were the first band from Canada to sign to Sub Pop in the early 1990's. They have released two full length LP's, 2012's New Jersey Hardcore, and last year's excellent follow up, Givin' Up On Free Jazz. In 2013, they paid tribute to the amazing Jonathan Richman with the EP, Who Wrote These Songs: A Very Short Tribute To...Jonathan Richman. The Everymen are currently preparing themselves for two U.S. tours in 2015, as they are one of the hardest working bands around. They plan on recording their third full-length LP later this year.

Out of her petite frame came a voice that immediately enthralled her hometown of Ménaka, Mali. Gobi's ambition from an early age was to be a singer, but, like women everywhere, she faced challenges: her family discouraged her; as a female artist from the distant province of Gao, it was tough to get recognized in the tightly knit artistic community in the capitol, Bamako; as a backup vocalist for many great musicians, it was difficult for her to get respect as lead singer and the confidence to front a group of male musicians who had always known her just as a chorus member. She formed her own group in 2010, and has released two albums in Mali in addition to performing extensively there. She repeatedly won awards as best solo singer in the province and has become its star female vocalist. She also has toured the sub-Saharan region, performing in Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Guinea, and Senegal. In September 2013 she sang in North America as a featured musician presented by Clermont Music in its second Festival au Desert /Caravan for Peace tour. This album is her first international release. Two of the album's tracks were recorded on September 9, 2012 in Studio Mali, Bamako; the other six tracks were recorded at Area 52 Studios in Saugerties, NY, on September 24, 2013. All the musicians featured on the album live in Mali and have performed with Gobi on various projects over the years. Pete Levin, the lone American heard on the recordings, graciously offered to sit in on keyboards for the Saugerties sessions.

NIGHTSATAN caught the ear of the attentive laser metal enthusiast with their  debut album, Midnight Laser Warrior, in 2010, and now the trio debut as movie  stars in Nightsatan And The Loops Of Doom. The movie draws inspiration from  the very same source the band does: '80s post-apocalyptic science fiction.

The synth trio NIGHTSATAN hail from the doomy city of Turku, Finland, and  they place themselves in the post-apocalyptic laser metal genre. In the beginning, the synth warrior Wolf Rami envisioned the band's music as "the soundtrack to Miami Vice meets heavy metal." During their career, the band's sound has extended to both ends of that spectrum, and the synth-metal riffs of the early material have given way for a more progressive and atmospheric approach.

Given the international cult fame gained with the already quite cinematic debut album - with kudos given by the likes of Monocle, Empire, and Popvoyage - and  live shows in their native Finland and Sweden, it is fitting that the trio's next  step is a movie soundtrack. Directed by Chrzu, better known as the director of  animated films such as Curse of the Remote Island (2008), Nightsatan and the Loops of Doom is a proud tribute to vintage Italian post-apocalyptic sci-if. It is a very unusual short epic, full of sex, violence, and general sense of wonder.The soundtrack album is a considerably more epic and measured affair than its predecessor. Recorded and produced by the band's second keyboard wizard Mazathoth, the album features full-length versions of all tracks from the movie.
