In March 2010, Animal Collective and visual artist Danny Perez (director of Oddsac, "Summertime Clothes" video, "Who Could Win A Rabbit" video, "You Can Count On Me" video , and Panda Bear live visuals) put on an installation called "Transverse Temporal Gyrus" at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. For the audio, each member of the band made individual sounds and songs. Over the course of two three-hour performances, the basic tracks were fed into a computer program that randomized the track order, and sometimes randomly combined stems from one track with stems from another. The program also panned the music in various directions around a 36 channel surround sound system that ran through 36 speakers set up from the top of the Guggenheim's l ramp to the bottom. The music on this 12" is a collage we made consisting of the original tracks, as well as live recordings made inside the Guggenheim before the doors were opened to the public. It will be the only physical format on which any of the music will be released. Coinciding with Record Store Day, we will also launch a website that recreates the audio computer program designed for the Guggenheim event. This will give listeners a new and unique collage each time the program is run. Danny Perez, who created the artwork for this 12", will also create video content for the website consisting of footage from, and projections used in the original event.

The great Leon Russell’s “Hummingbird” anchors this new 10 inch, and Bonny and his assembled cast of LA musicians render it an exercise in contrast. Using Russell’s famed Shelter Records soundboard for this one-off session--with its memories of Petty and Cale, and now owned by one Jonathan Wilson--Bonny introduces a pallet of musical soundscapes including the keys of "Farmer" Dave Scher, the porch-stomp grooves of Entrance Band rhythm section Paz and Derek and the claps of a thousand hands before letting the song "fly away" in a breeze of soulful psychedelia that stretches nearly twice the original’s length.

Next up: a cover of the traditional “Tribulations,” with Cairo Gang mainman Emmett Kelly, in a purely Appalachian reflection on judgment and fear and all manner of Old Testament threat.

Rounding out this powerful trio with a nod to Lightnin' Hopkins and Michael Hurley, Bonny makes another run (this time all by his lonesome) at Merle Haggard's "Because of Your Eyes".  This one lo-fi, wooly, and unscrubbed with that recorded-in-a-kitchen-near-a-

Brooklyn‘s CSC Funk Band were the first funk project for the legendary New York hip-hop label Fat Beats so it only makes sense that the band would record an exclusive vinyl-only tribute record to one of hip-hop‘s most influential groups-Gang Starr. In the spring of 2011 CSC Funk Band were tapped to play Fat Beat‘s Record Store Day pop-up store in their Brooklyn warehouse and to backup MC‘s in an all-out tribute to the late, great Guru, a high point being hip hop legend Masta Ace‘s take on the Gang Starr classic “Who's Gonna Take the Weight.” Inspired by the tribute session and encouraged by their peers, CSC Funk Band began recording instrumental tracks of music inspired by Gang Starr in Fat Beats Brooklyn studio. Some of CSC Funk Band members came to funk by listening to Gang Starr records, so the opportunity pay tribute to a major source of inspiration is considered no less than an honor. This 2 LP set was cut from a cassette recording of DEVO’s show in Seattle, WA show in November ‘81. DEVO archivist Michael Pilmer (aka Devo-Obsesso), found the tape in a shoebox full of cassettes in Bob No 2’s home fifteen years ago, which he immediately transferred it to DAT. Afterward it promptly disappeared in the flotsam of Devo history. Here resurrected it stands as a testament to Prince’s claim “Devo, you guys are crazy!” Yes, crazy tight and relentless like Caucasian James Browns on marching powder. Enjoy.

With his handlebar moustache and booming baritone, Lee Hazlewood was one of the defining stars of the late '60s. Though he's perhaps best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra (including writing mega-hit "These Boots Are Made For Walking"), Hazlewood did stunning work away from that particular glamour queen and found latter day champions in Beck, Sonic Youth, and Jarvis Cocker. Now, for Record tore Day 2012, we are kicking off our excavation of the Lee Hazlewood archives with this anthology,Singles, Nudes & Backsides, collecting the best of Lee's solo songs and duets from his LHI (Lee Hazlewood Industries) imprint.

As a true legend of the great American songbook and a rebellious pioneer who left behind a lengthy trail of echo laden pop masterpieces, Lee's influence continues to reverberate today. Between 1968-71, Hazlewood not only released his finest solo work, but produced numerous artists on LHI. From acid-folk and country-rock to pop-psych and soul, LHI issued dozens of long forgotten 45s and LPs. This series will include material from LHI(re-mastered for the first time from the original analog tapes), along with Lee's output for other labels, rarities, unreleased gems, and the films of Torbjörn Axelman.

See the sleeve: surrounded by nude girls, each wearing a fake moustache, Hazlewood wears a suit, ever-so-slightly awkwardly playing the role of the '60s playboy. Just like the picture, the songs present a man conflicted; he's the tender-hearted romantic, the broken-hearted loser and the rugged cowboy, all in one. It's there in the western swing of "Califia (Stone Rider)", the loneliness of "The Bed" and the bleak beauty of "If It's Monday Morning." Hazlewood's tremulous voice was made for duets (indeed, he wrote "Some Velvet Morning", one of the greatest of all time); here, Suzi Jane Hokom, Ann-Margret and Nina Lizell play counterpart to his manly tones.

In the wonderful liner notes, written by British journalist Wyndham Wallace, the writer describes his friend Hazlewood as "a curmudgeonly, unpredictable sort at the best of times, as impatient with his own talent as he is with other people." The Hazlewood Wallace knew was puzzled by the growing interest in him in the last two decades of his life, which was ended by cancer at age 78. That late flurry of interest saw him perform at the Royal Festival Hall in 1999, his first ever solo performance in the UK.

A natural wanderer, Lee lived a big life, fighting in the Korean War, working as a radio DJ in Phoenix, Arizona, setting up Viv Records in the '50s, working as a big-shot LA producer in the '60s, signing Phil Spector to his Trey Records label and prematurely announcing retirement in the wake of the mid-'60s British invasion. He didn't: Nancy Sinatra came along, the hits started flowing and he continued producing characterful solo albums into the '70s, which saw his move to Sweden. By 2007, Hazlewood was living in Vegas, and begrudgingly enjoying that flurry of latter-day interest in his work. This landmark compilation promises to create many more converts.

On October 18th, 2011, JEFF The Brotherhood joined by William Tyler (Tompkins Square), Loney Hutchins (Cleft Records) and Joey Plunket in recording Volume 3 of the Upstairs at United series. Each song in this session was recorded in a single take direct to ¼ inch tape then cut at 45 RPM for the ultimate listening experience.

JEFF The Brotherhood, the sibling duo of Jake & Jamin Orrall show their prog rock side on this recording. While the recording consists of only three songs those songs totalled enough time that they rocked out until they literally ran out of tape (as can be heard at the end of ''In Space No One Can Hear You Scream, Part II').' While traditionally a two piece, JEFF The Brotherhood, was joined in this session by William Tyler on guitar, Loney Hutchins on keys and crazy space sounds, and Joey Plunket on bass. The recording features an 11 minute version of tour favorite ''I'm A Freak'', an 11 minute cover of Hawkwind's ''Master Of The Universe'' and the 8 minute improvisational jam ''In Space No One Can Hear You Scream''.
