The Ad Libs, a pheonominal-yet-underappreciated American vocal group hailing from Hudson County, NJ, had their first and only smash hit within their first year as a group, with 'The Boy From New York City.' Though several other singles from the doo-wop group landed on the Billboard R&B chart's, The Ad Libs never released a full album. Swingin' in Seattle: Live at the Penthouse (1966-1967) is a collection of previously-unissued recordings by the Cannonball Adderley Sextet captured live at the height of his powers over 4 nights at the famous Penthouse jazz club in Seattle, WA between 1966 and 1967. Just one week later, Adderley would record his classic Mercy, Mercy, Mercy: Live at "The Club" album at the Capitol Records studio in Hollywood, CA. JazzFest Berlin (also known as the Berlin Jazz Festival) is a jazz festival based in Berlin, Germany. Originally called the "Berliner Jazztage" (Berlin Jazz Days, until 1980 when the name was changed), it was founded in 1964 in West Berlin by the Berliner Festspiele. Whereas famous US jazz celebrities set the tone during the first decades, the Berlin Jazz Festival increasingly has presented artists from all around the globe, with an increasing emphasis on contemporary European jazz. Earth Rot is visionary composer/arranger/producer David Axelrod’s third album, and the last of his Capitol Trilogy. Recorded as a concept album about the decrepit state of the environment in 1970 Los Angeles, and scheduled for release on the first Earth Day, it features choral vocals and marks a departure for Axelrod’s signature sound, which would take on a jazzier feel in the 1970s.

Blue Cheer were the loudest, heaviest band of the 1960s. What they played and how they played it was labeled Heavy Metal – partly from a reference by the Beat writer William F. Originally released in April 1992, sandwiched between their first two albums (Pod and Last Splash), The Breeders' Safari EP cxame at a time when Kim's Pixies commitments were winding down and her new band was on the cusp of releasing a platinum-selling album. Their first record to feature Kim Deal's twin sister Kelley (and the only Breeders release with both Kelley Deal and Tanya Donnelly), the EP was recorded in two studios with the bulk coming from a session in New York, which provided an early version of "Do You Love Me Now?", "Don't Call Home" and a cover of The Who's "So Sad About Us". Roy Buchanan is the guitarist’s guitar hero. Singularly uninterested in rock stardom and the trappings of fame that go with it, Buchanan never achieved the popularity of his six-string peers; yet his unfathomable technique and ferocious Telecaster tone put him near the top of any serious listing of the greatest guitarists of all time. Stories abound about the regard with which other musicians held Roy (and the indifference with which he greeted their esteem); for example, legend has it he turned down the Rolling Stones for the job Mick Taylor got, and blew off playing with John Lennon, while Jeff Beck dedicated “’Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers” from Blow by Blow to him. These days, his ability to create the sounds he did without the use of any effects, often from his patented “pinch harmonic” method of playing, continue to astound players both casual and professional. Buchanan recorded a number of commendable studio albums, but on stage was where the magic happened; that’s why most listeners deem the 1974 Live Stock album to be his best. But the tracks on that album, like most live records, were cherry-picked from several different shows, in this case both sets Roy played at New York City’s Town Hall on November 27, 1974. In fact, of the 21 songs Roy played that night, only six came out on Live Stock, and one other, a version of Neil Young’s “Down by the River,” came out on a subsequent compilation. That leaves 14 unreleased performances—and now, Real Gone Music presents Live at Town Hall 1974, a 3-LP set that captures both shows in their entirety, drawn from the original multitrack tapes recorded that night by The Record Plant Mobile Studio. Several things strike you as you listen to these two shows. First, this was a good band, perhaps Roy’s best, with Malcolm Lukens on keyboards, John Harrison on bass, Ronnie “Byrd” Foster on drums, and Billy Price on lead vocals when Roy didn’t take a turn. Second, the six tracks originally selected for Live Stock were the “safe” tracks, showing the band at their most succinct. It’s no accident that all but one came from the first show; during the second show, the band—perhaps spurred on by some refreshment during intermission—positively swaggers as Roy deals one lightning lead after another, even having fun with a faulty patch cord on the first song of the second set. For this monumental release, we’ve made every effort to put you right in the front row; both our liner note writer (Buchanan biographer Phil Carson) and photographer (Charles R. Cohen) were there that night, and have the stories and shots to prove it. Mixed and mastered by Tom Lewis at Studio 1093 in Athens, Georgia, and produced by Bill Levenson, this one’s a major addition to the Buchanan discography and further proof that nobody, but nobody, played guitar like Roy Buchanan.

Except this time, Ken Sharp’s notes feature track-by-track commentary from Bun E. Carlos, Tom Petersson, and Rick Nielsen…this collection is a deep dive into the Cheap Trick hive mind! So let’s jump in…first up are three tracks taken from the 1980 EP Found All the Parts, including a live version of The Beatles’ “Day Tripper” with an instrumental nod to The Yardbirds’ “Shapes of Things.” Then comes the single “Oh Boy,” followed by the demo of “Loser,” which was recorded in 1980 but was written by Nielsen way back in 1976. Originally released in 1981, What We Do Is Secret is a collection of material recorded by American punk band The Germs between 1977 and 1980. The driving EP, under 20 minutes in length, encompasses the sound of the Southern California punk scene in the late 70’s. While most of the tracks come from various studio sessions, several live tracks from the group’s last show at the Starwood nightclub are featured on the record, including a full track of dialogue that gives a listener true insight into attending a Germs show. Blind Lemon Jefferson, “The Father of Texas Blues,” was the best-selling malevblues artist of the 1920's, recording 92 sides for Paramount Records and one released 78 for Okeh Records: “Black Snake Moan / Matchbox Blues”. Jefferson produced an original, driving, unpredictably advanced guitar style and a distinctive booming high-pitched, two-octave voice that no one could imitate. King stated, “His touch is different from anybody on the guitar—still is. He was majestic and played just a regular little six-string guitar with a little round hole. Musician and producer Marvin Etzioni first saw Maria McKee and Ryan Hedgecock in a club in 1982, playing George Jones and Hank Williams covers. He convinced them they needed original material. After working and writing, the band added Dave Harrington (bass) and Don Willens (drums), the band worked up material with Etzioni and cut 5 of the 6 tracks at the famed Record Plant. An earlier session provides the 6th track. The Western Tapes: 1983 exhibits the genesis of this highly-infl uential band. While the original demo version of “Drugstore Cowboy” has appeared on various compilations, the remainder of the other tracks from the sessions have remained in the can. Two of the tracks appear in their earliest demo form and wound up landing on the classic 1988 Lone Justice debut, “Working Late” and “Don’t Toss Us Away” (written by Maria’s half-brother, Bryan MacLean of the classic band, Love) which would eventually become a top 5 smash for Country superstar Patty Loveless. Released in conjunction with the band, the EP was mastered by Bernie Grundman (who also cut the 45 RPM lacquers). It’s a look into where they started and foretells where they would go.
As Etzioni (who would later join the band) says in his liner notes: “With countless hours together, it was a fun and innocent time. I believed we were creating a 21st century country band.”

Ofege was formed in the early 1970s by a bunch of teenagers at the St. Gregory’s College in Lagos Nigeria. They were largely influenced by the guitar solos of Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page while closer to home, they were influenced by the music of ‘BLO’ (Berkley Jones, Laolu Akins and Mike Odumosu), ‘Monomono’ (led by Joni Haastrup), The Funkees, and Ofo The Black Company. Due to their vibrant combo of sweet harmonies, hooks & fuzz, Ofege would become one of the most legendary Nigerian groups of all time, with expressive sales and national stardom. Published in 1975 and never reissued until now, "Blue Frog... and others" is a 10-song LP in which composer Enrico Simonetti, father of Claudio from Goblin, wrote all five tracks on side A together with Nicola De Vincenti and directed the orchestra in the whole record. Formed in Chicago, IL in 1988, The Smashing Pumpkins released their heralded debut album Gish in 1991 and found mainstream success with 1993’s 4x multi-platinum Siamese Dream and 1995’s 10x multi-platinum Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Following the release of Adore, Machina/The Machines of God, and Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music, the group’s original lineup disbanded in 2000. Singer/guitarist Billy Corgan reformed the group in 2005, enlisting various collaborators for Zeitgeist, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, Oceania, and Monuments to an Elegy. Soul Asylum first hit the Minneapolis music scene in early 1981. Core members Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, and Karl Mueller met at local punk rock shows. "Wicked System of Things was written and recorded very quickly in early 2017. It was partly inspired by a show I had played with Cheap Trick in January. After the show, Tom Peterson (who I’ve known for a long time) and I had discussed he and Rick Nielson playing bass and guitar on something of mine, and needless to say I was giddy about the idea! With this in mind I immediately started about a week of writing, then recorded drums with Ric Menck, and even though it never worked out for the Cheap Trick guys to play on the record (we both had new albums and extensive touring coming last summer) I quickly finished up the project playing bass myself, with Jason Victor playing most of the guitars. I think of the project now as a sort of a tribute to midwestern power pop, having grown up in Nebraska idolizing bands like Cheap Trick, The Raspberries, Shoes etc. Recorded here in Omaha, it too has Midwest roots. Some of Jason’s guitar has a bit of an 80s new wave vibe, and maybe the whole record has a special vibe that allowed for that. The singles released by Gloria Ann Taylor are well-established rare treasures in the Soul music canon.  Although Taylor was nominated for a Grammy, performed live on bills featuring The Emotions, Johnnie Taylor, B.B. King, and The O’Jays, and had a circle of friends that included Bootsy Collins and James Brown, by the the mid-1970s her career had stalled and she abruptly quit the music business.  Taylor’s records later became highly sought-after by DJs and rare groove collectors, prized for a hauntingly soulful sound that mixed northern soul with exotic percussion and psychedelic guitars.  Gloria Ann Taylor passed away in December 2017 at the ago of 73.  Now, for the first time since 1973, her famed single “Deep Inside You” is back in print on 7” vinyl, courtesy of Nature Sounds.  This limited-edition pressing of the often-sampled Columbia Records release also includes the original b-side “World That’s Not Real”.

The all acoustic Goin' Way Back was recorded in a single afternoon in a Montreal rooming house during a 1967 Canadian tour. In between shows, Muddy and his band gathered in a living room, armed only with acoustic guitar, for a spirited walk through threir collective blues memory. An interesting side note is that legendary pianist Otis Spann is confined exclusively to guitar here, as are the other members of Muddy's group. Goin' Way Back is a unique, appealing snapshot of the acoustic Delta roots that the Chicago blues godfather never abandoned. Würm was a sludge metal band started in 1973 by bass player Chuck Dukowski, who would later join Black Flag. Without Würm, the genres of punk rock and hardcore would never have been the same. The band's practice space, the Würmhole -  a hangout for musicians in Hermosa Beach during the mid-late 70's - is where Keith Morris and Greg Ginn met Dukowski and ultimately formed the original Black Flag line-up. The band's only album, Feast, was released in 1985 after the band's demise. With the help of Chuck Dukowski, the long-out-of-print LP is being "exhumed" and reissued, along with a second LP featuring unreleased tracks, demos, and more. The package comes complete with retrospective liner notes from Dukowski himself, plus never-before-seen photos from the early days. The double LP release will come on a limited edition color vinyl presisng, exclusively for Record Store Day Black Friday.
