After legendary English musician David Bowie started his movie career by playing the lead in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) he was starring in Just a Gigolo (Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo). The West German movie about a Prussian officer who works as a gigolo in a brothel run by the Baroness (Marlene Dietrich) after he returns home from the great war, included different songs. Bowie contributed a piece of music to the film; his so-called "Revolutionary Song", played by a band called The Rebels. Later it became a collector’s item. Besides this track the 7-inch include the 1928 title song Just a Gigolo, performed by Marlene Dietrich. It was her last film appearance and last song she recorded during her lifetime.

Decca launched its much-loved World Of Series in 1968. The first album looked at one of the label’s biggest selling artists – yet hardly one that chimed with the counter culture in 1968. The World Of Mantovani – SPA 1, (or PA 1 in mono) – was a 14 track collection, each track a different selection from his sizeable Decca album catalogue. Released in the autumn of the year, it acted as a perfect primer, and its price, 17s, put it shy of the 37s 6d of the full price albums. Its whole raison d’etre was to drive sales of the artist’s deeper repertoire – dip in here and then indulge further – the rear sleeve clearly offered the catalogue numbers of the parent albums.

The series would run throughout the 70s and become a ubiquitous feature of the label. It was taken so seriously, that David Bowie himself offered the track listing for his own addition to the series, (SPA/PA 58), which was released in March 1970 after the success of the Phillips-released single Space Oddity. It also showed how the World Ofs could be a veritable treasure trove for rarities and one-offs, as it contained the first official release of Let Me Sleep Beside You, Karma Man and In The Heat Of The Morning.

According to Kevin Cann’s invaluable book on Bowie’s early years, Any Day Now, Bowie bought a copy of the original himself from a record shop on Beckenham High Street. It became a big seller – indeed, Decca repackaged it – when Bowie finally became a big star. Imagine the shock people had thinking they had The Jean Genie when what they had was Uncle Arthur and Little Bombardier.

The never-before-seen in its entirety, visual documentation proving this avant-garde collaboration of mythic proportions did indeed occur. Recorded at Sideshows by the Seashore along the Coney Island boardwalk on June 8th, 1986 as documented on VHS by John Polizzi under the commission of event producers Rick Russo and Bronwyn Rucker. It was long believed that Cage and Ra never performed together but as you’ll see,these two shared the stage the entire time. The VHS footage has been combined with the audio master (containing several silent sections and some mic issues that occurred during the production), which breathes new life into the tiny reels of tape. The silent passages illuminate new auras when presented with the previously unseen visual component, and now over thirty years since it was recorded, you can truly experience the full spectacle. Included here is an additional audio track of commentary featuring Rick Russo. Also included in this package is a 45 RPM record documenting John Cage performing verses from his Empty Words writings while accompanied by Sun Ra. For RSD 2019 comes the first official worldwide LP reissue of Alice Clark's highly sought-after soul jazz classic produced by Mainstream Records' Bob Shad in 1972. When it comes to legendary albums, very few can match the cult status achieved on the international jazz and funk scene by Alice Clark's eponymous album. The record, which went unnoticed when it first came out, has become one of the most sought-after albums ever since it became cult on the London jazz and funk scene in the late '80s. It is now being acknowledged as one of the best soul albums of all-times. Recorded live over two days at the Record Plant studios in New York City, the album was produced by Bob Shad and arranged by jazz veteran Ernie Wilkins with a big band setting. The music is a superb mix of jazz and soul blessed by Clark's superb singing and including two all-time favorites, "Don't You Care" and "Never Did I Stop Loving You", plus a selection of heart-wrenching songs beautifully sung by Clark. Very little is known about Alice Clark and the legendary two-day session, outside the fact that she only ever recorded one album and passed away in the early 2000s.

With this RSD release, Wewantsounds will tell the Alice Clark story for the first time and give a unique insight into the birth of this cult album with a deluxe release that will pay tribute to her talent. Best known for his striking and bizarre images (and the Chupa Chups® logo), Salvador Dalí was a highly imaginative individual and constantly indulging in unusual and grandiose behaviour.

His public appearances were always a spectacle and in August 1961 it was announced that the Master would arrive in Venice by whale. Nobody knows whether he did or not, but certainly his presence caused the most bizarre spectacle in the most beautiful opera house, the Teatro La Fenice – in fact the first completely surrealistic stage performance Dalí had known . . .

On stage a blind man watches television, a wardrobe mistress constantly irons, a carcass of beef hangs surrounded by flies, a limp watch is handed around; and before Dalí's famous paintings there are processions of limping beggars, gondoliers, and finally the Master himself in a gondolier's gleaming white uniform and a red Catalan cap.

Decca were on hand to document the event in Venice, August 1961. This iconic moment and accompanying performances were caught on record by two legendary Decca employees: Producer Erik Smith and engineer Roy Wallace*

Since the early aughts, rapper Diabolic and producer Vanderslice have moved in similar circles, so it was only a matter of time that they would join forces for a collaborative record. With the release of Collusion, that time is now, and it couldn’t have arrived at a more perfect moment. The project eschews every trend and flash-in-the-pan style to create a record that’s a must-listen for anyone who truly appreciates sharp lyricism and neck snapping production. “We’re two artists with 18 years of friendship, colluding to form a cohesive monster,” Diabolic says of working with Vanderslice. “The chemistry is automatic,“ he adds. “At first, we tested the waters to see if the chemistry was there, and if we could actually make a cohesive record, that we were both passionate about, and we did,” echoes Slice. It’s apparent that Collusion is an absolute force when you hear opening track “Think of That,” a blistering banger featuring shots at his rivals, over Slice’s hypnotic production. And the remainder of the album hits just as hard, with tracks like the chest-thumping “Normalize,” the Nems featured heater, “See the Light,” the DJ Revolution-assisted “Simon Phoenix,” and the B-Side opener, “The Other Side,” which Vanderslice claims to be one of his toughest beats in years. In addition to battle-ready bars and neck-breaking production, the lyrics and album title of course reference the nation’s current political climate. By the 1970s Reggae had spread from Jamaica and become an international phenomena. Enter Dillinger, who rose up with the El Paso Sound System as part of the second generation of Jamaican toasters. His name came from American gangster John Dillinger at the suggestion of none other than Lee Perry (who produced his first album). A deal with Island Records followed, with sessions happening at Channel One Studios with Joseph "Jo Jo" Hoo Kim producing. Recording at Channel One in mid-70s meant Dillinger and Jo Jo were tapping into an immense talent pool in the form of The Revolutionaries, the studio’s in-house band. CB 200 features contributions from Earl “Chinna” Smith, Aston “Family Man” Barrett, Ansel Collins, Sly Dunbar, and Tommy McCook among others. The release also brought forth the career defining cut “Cokane In My Brain”, a hit record on an international basis.

Despite the success of CB 200 and “Cokane In My Brain” the release has remained out of print in all formats since the mid-1980s. Get On Down is about to change that, with their Record Store Day 2019 reissue of this too often overlooked Reggae masterpiece.

These are the first recordings since Gameface’s reunion album in 2014, Now Is What Matters Now. They came as a surprise to to the band, who hadn’t intended to write or record any new material, but inspiration struck on the heels of their Japan tour earlier this year and they went directly into the studio as soon as they were back in California. “I Owe You One” is the most upbeat and catchy song they’ve written since My Star (from Every Last Time 1999). The Tom Petty song is poignant for two reasons. They are huge fans and were heartbroken (pun intended) to hear of his unexpected passing last year. The band chose to record “Two Gunslingers” because of its message of change, in light of our country’s mass shooting epidemic and sick obsession with guns. Gameface’s next adventure is in September when they head over to Brazil for the first time to play some festival shows.

Benjamin Gibbard’s Me and Magdalena / The Concept is a split single with two unreleased tracks taken from separate sessions Gibbard did with Richard Swift, the renowned singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer who tragically passed away in 2018.  The single is the second entry by Fug Yep Soundation, a 7” series created in loving memory of our friend & musical hero, Richard Swift. Its goal, through releasing music, is to raise awareness for addiction and bring community to those suffering.  The A-side is the unreleased demo of “Me and Magdalena” which Gibbard wrote for The Monkees 2016 album Good Times!. The B-side is an alternate unreleased version of Teenage Fanclub's “The Concept” from Gibbard’s cover of the band’s classic Bandwagonesque album, which he released in 2017. Inside the vast Goblin archive, "Yell" is perhaps one of the less well-known tracks, that undoubtedly deserves no less attention that the band's most famous works. It's a song composed for bass guitar, percussion and keyboards where an opening reminiscent of "L'alba dei morti viventi" is followed by a sudden vibe change, due to the quick entrance of all the other instruments: electric piano chords, a pulsating bass, obscure synths and twisted keyboards still preserve that mix of tension and and darkness that made Goblin unique in the soundtracks area.
The song was composed on commission at the end of 1978 to be used as the intro theme for a series of seven TV thriller/horror movies called "Sette storie per non dormire" (a title that could be translated into "Seven stories that won't let you sleep") that was broadcast in the autumn of the same year by the Italian Rete 2 RAI channel; taking advantage of the success of the series, Cinevox Record decided to release "Yell" on a 45rpm that included, as B-side, the song "...e suono Rock" taken from the album "Il fantastico viaggio del Bagarozzo Mark".

The original edition of "Yell" is today one of the rarest Golbin releases, and is exclusively reissued for the first time ever by AMS Records on red vinyl, for the Record Store Day 2019 event. Not to be missed!

Originally released in 1973, this is the album that raised the band to an international level of popularity, primarily on the strength of the hit single and enduring radio favourite "Radar Love." Moontan still is the band's most successful album internationally, and paved the way for these Dutch rockers in the USA (where "Candy's Going Bad" was also released as a single). Around the time of the album's release, Golden Earring toured the States with opening acts that would become huge rock bands only a few years later (Aerosmith and KISS). They also shared stages with names like Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd.

The line-up of the Earring at that time was Barry Hay, George Kooymans, Rinus Gerritsen and Cesar Zuiderwijk, with special guests Eelco Gelling (slide guitar), Bertus Borgers (saxophone) and Patricia Paay ("lady vocal") on this particular LP. The record combines progressive epics and heavy rockers, and sometimes even combines both elements in one song. Moontan is not just a necessity for Golden Earing fans, it's a worthwhile listen for anyone interested in Seventies Rock at its most adventurous.

Griot Galaxy is a “secret” jewel of Detroit’s avant-garde jazz history – until now.

That is to say, they will always be a jewel of Detroit’s avant-garde jazz history, their deeply passionate music a testament to experimentation, freedom, and blackness. But with the long-awaited reissue of their first album, the hard-to-find Kins, the secret is out.

Griot Galaxy doesn’t strictly begin with Kins. It begins with visionary bandleader and saxophonist Faruq Z. Bey’s musical and political awakening in the late ‘60s, when the 1967 Detroit Rebellion was tearing Detroit apart and Coltrane’s untimely death was devastating the jazz community. Kins, recorded in 1981 and originally released in 1982, is a masterstroke of creative Detroit jazz. The freeness of the playing is anchored by a serious propensity for rhythm, evident in the way its members layered their collective backgrounds in bebop, funk, reggae, and other styles within the expansive possibility of sonic expression. And all but 200 or so copies of the original 2000 pressed were unintentionally trashed.

Griot Galaxy’s willingness to push boundaries was as affectionate as it was fearless. Kins is Detroit's post-Coltrane, high-on-Sun-Ra bridge into the ‘80s. They certainly weren’t the first to experiment with polyrhythms, odd meters, and tonal scales beyond the traditional concepts, but it was in part the combination of Shahid and Tabbal’s previous experience with Sun Ra, as well as Tabbal’s experience with one-time Arkestra trumpeter Phil Cohran, that allowed the group to blossom.

Donning silver face paint and spouting poetry on stage, the group gained notoriety for both impressive musicianship and theatrical proto-Afrofuturist flourishes as they played all over town, including Cobb’s Corner, a jazz bar in the Cass Corridor.

We’re lucky that lead engineer Ron DeCorte saved the original master tapes, from which these recordings came. Although most of the wider world didn’t get a chance to experience the wonder of Griot Galaxy at the time, we will gloriously, happily, gratefully take what we can get now.

In 1952, Guthrie wrote and recorded a song at home titled “I Don’t Like The Way This World’s A-Treatin’ Me.” The track appears on vinyl for the first time on a limited edition 10" of the same name for Record Store Day 2019. Also found on this special release is a second version of the demo with new accompaniment from Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, who, along with Billy Bragg and Wilco, released a series of acclaimed albums featuring their interpretations of unearthed Guthrie lyrics. Mermaid Avenue, the first in the series, was nominated for a Grammy® in 2000.

If those two tracks weren’t enough, I Don’t Like The Way This World’s A-Treatin’ Me includes two versions of “Beech Haven Ain’t My Home” (a.k.a. “Old Man Trump”), whose lyrics were discovered within the Woody Guthrie Archives and chronicle the time the Guthrie family lived under landlord Fred Trump. As two drafts of the lyrics exist, the Riot-Folk Musician’s Collective’s Ryan Harvey combined them. This release contains a version by Harvey featuring Ani DiFranco and Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave), and another from Irion’s band U.S. Elevator.

Available exclusively for Record Store Day as a 10" EP, I Don’t Like The Way This World’s A-Treatin’ Me is not only an historic, but a musical document, released in conjunction and with full cooperation from the Woody Guthrie Archives. As stated in the album’s notes: “These songs were mostly written well over half a century ago, but they are songs for our times to be sure.”

It is truly time for this music to be heard.

“Dedication” is a unique Herbie Hancock outing in more ways than one. This is a solo Hancock release, all sounds heard on this recording are Hancock at the keyboards, be it an acoustic piano, a Fender Rhodes or a synth. The result being a recording that’s full of air and space, yet thoroughly funky. The project was recorded live in Tokyo in July of 1974 and never saw release outside of Japan until well into the 21st century. No official vinyl issue has ever happened outside of Japan where the LP has been out of print for decades.

Lilly Hiatt is the critically acclaimed daughter of singer-songwriter legend, John Hiatt. In the fall of 2018 they got together to record a version of one anothers songs. If one is aware of high prices on online music sites or is a part of any worldwide record collectors' circles, albums from groups such as Ithaca and Agincourt might sound familiar. Producers, composers, singers and multi-instrumentalists Peter Howell and John Ferdinando are two English musicians who started their partnership in the mid-1960s. From 1968, with the release of their soundtrack for the play Alice Through The Looking Glass, until the release of a project called Friends in 1974, they put together a total of five albums, Ithaca (1973) and Agincourt (1970) being the two most expensive and collectable of all of them. Incredibly rare and highly sought-after for years, the records contained a magical world brimming with folk music, soft psychedelia, psych-pop and progressive overtones; their music is absolutely exquisite and truly unique. It is predominantly folk, but very far from its traditional format. The longer one listens to their legacy, the longer one is going to find peculiar elements of classical gestures plus many flourishes of soft psychedelia, idiosyncratic progressive overtones, acid-folk and a taste that one is always entering the enchanting toy world of psych-pop. It does make total sense that the word "cult" is frequently applied to describe their creations. On Ithaca, Agincourt And Other Psych-Folk Fairy Tales (a 21 track double LP accompanied by a 19 track CD of totally distinct material), one also has the chance to read their own words. Both of them were interviewed for the liner notes, where they reveal their secret influences and their simple but unexpected ways of creating and composing. Alex Zhang Hungtai, formerly known by his stage name Dirty Beaches, is a Taiwanese-born musician who spent his formative years in Honolulu, Hawaii. As Dirty Beaches, Alex released a number of albums, including Badlands, which was subsequently nominated as a long-list nominee for the Polaris Music Prize. The composition for August at Akiko's takes his instrumental work with Dirty Beaches to more personal and experimental levels. Bauhaus and Love & Rockets co-founder David J Haskins, the man responsible for the lyrics of Bauhaus’ classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead," is releasing the first great protest song of the year, exclusively for RSD 2019. "Thoughts and Prayers" is a scathing rebuke of the United States for it's inability to stop the senseless mass school shootings that are killing our nation's children. On June 3, 1977, Billy Joel and his band wrapped their tour with a performance at New York’s venerable Carnegie Hall. The audience was treated to a stellar set, accompanied by a live orchestra and featuring several then-unreleased songs, including the newly-written epic “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” and the romantic “Just The Way You Are.” One of the show’s many attendees was producer/engineer Phil Ramone, who helped Billy translate his boundless live energy into his blockbuster fifth album, The Stranger, released later that year. Robert Johnson, “The King of The Delta Blues Singers”, achieved his reputation based on 29 timeless recordings cut for the ARC/Vocalion group of labels at five sessions held between November 23, 1936 and June 20, 1937.

The impact of Johnson's combined intense vocals, outstanding guitar skills and songwriting talent introduced a musical and lyrical vocabulary that formed the foundation of modern blues and blues rock that influenced generations of musicians including Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones. Eric Clapton is quoted as saying that “Robert Johnson to me is the most important blues musician who ever lived”.

Born Under A Bad Sign is Albert King’s legendary first album for Stax Records, and features Booker T. & The MGs and the Memphis Horns. The Indianola, Mississippi-born “King of the Blues Guitar,” cemented his legacy with this debut set. While he’d recorded for labels like Vee-Jay, Parrot and Bobbin, it was his chemistry with the Stax team — label executives Al Bell, Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, songwriters Booker T. Jones and William Bell, and backing from Booker T. & the MGs and the Memphis Horns — that put King on the blues map. King’s first Stax recording was “Laundromat Blues,” included on this album. Booker T. Jones and Stax soul singer William Bell came up with the thundering bass riff that defined the title track “Born Under a Bad Sign.” The song notched #49 on the R&B chart in 1967. The album has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and included in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” This ALL-ANALOG reissue has been mastered from the original mono tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Memphis Record Pressing. The mono mix of this album has been unavailable on vinyl since the album's original 1967 release.
