Neal Casal‘s debut record, Fade Away Diamond Time, was released in 1995 to much critical acclaim. Produced by Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash) in a sprawling mansion in the hills of Santa Ynez, California, the album introduced the intimate songwriting and lyrical guitar work that would become the foundation of his career. In between recording and touring with other artists such as Beachwood Sparks, Vetiver, Fruit Bats, Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks, Gin Wigmore and Rufus Wainwright, Casal managed to record multiple solo releases, including 1996’s Rain, Wind, and Speed and 1998’s Basement Dreams, both of which have recently been reissued with discs of bonus material by Fargo Records. MOJO recently wrote, “What made [Basement Dreams] so compelling was the tone, the simplicity and economy with which Casal approached each song and the naturalness with which he inhabits them… pieces of singer-songwriter perfection.”
For its first vinyl release, this RSD 2020 release of Fade Away Diamond Time is pressed on green vinyl to support the Mindful Vinyl campaign, with a portion of the proceeds going to The Jed Foundation.

The original Frumpie One Piece release was only on CD. It was a collection of tracks previously released over five 7" singles, from a Bikini Kill-related band who were conceived as a singles project. This vinyl release includes the songs from the CD as well as the one 7 inch that was released after the collection (Frumpies Forever 7"). The personnel of this band was 3/4 of Bikini Kill (Tobi Vail, Kathi Wilcox, Billy Karren), plus 1/3 of Bratmobile (Molly Neuman), and they were sometimes joined by Michelle Mae, who went on to be in The Make-Up and Weird War.  The Frumpies were formed in Washington DC during the same 1991 summer that birthed the first Riot Grrrl zines and meetings, which the Frumpies dubbed Revolution Summer.

This single LP version of Pińata, the acclaimed rap album from 2014 that debuted at Number 39 on Billboard’s Top 200, is presented in a unique cover for RSD 2020. The cover is a collaboration between Jeff Jank and Pathetic Pixels with inspiration found in the unique graphics and content of 1970s Blaxploitation films. Pińata is “a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax,” says Gibbs, who came up on the streets of Gary, Indiana, the disregarded city previously best known for producing Michael Jackson. Here he is joined by Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul and a host of others in setting his soliloquies of the streets alongside film snippets and dusted funk, soul and prog musical tapestries.

Jimmy Giuffre’s early collaborations with pianist Paul Bley and bassist Steve Swallow resulted in music that was far more complex and experimental than jazz audiences of the time had come to expect. While Giuffre may not be a marquee name, he should certainly be credited as one of the innovators who helped redirect jazz into new forms of improvised activity beginning in the early 1960s. This performance, recorded on October 27, 1961 in Graz, Austria, is a perfect example of that innovation. Receiving its first ever vinyl pressing, the concert audio was mastered for vinyl at Infrasonic Mastering and pressed across two 12” LPs at Pallas Group in Germany, exclusively for Record Store Day.

Orange Mountain Music is proud to announce the special RECORD STORE DAY 2020 release of the complete soundtrack to the classic film KOYAANISQATSI for the first time on vinyl and limited to 1500 numbered units.

Directed by Godfrey Reggio with an iconic score by Philip Glass, KOYAANISQATSI premiered in 1982 and quickly became a cult classic. With cinematography by Ron Fricke and containing no plot or words, KOYAANISQATSI was interpreted by some to be an anthem for the environment and by others to be an indictment of modernity. Overall, the film was hailed for its pioneering techniques which have been variously imitated over the past four decades.

In convincing Philip Glass to become a primary contributor to the making of the film, Reggio found the perfect analogue to what he was trying to express through the images. The score that Glass composed was groundbreaking and came at a time of new expressivity for the composer. KOYAANISQATSI came at the end of the period when Glass was composing his landmark ''Portrait Trilogy'' of operas based on people who changed the world through the power of their ideas.

The title of the film comes from the Hopi language, and is defined as: ''life in turmoil, ''life disintegrating,'' ''crazy life,'' ''life out of balance'' or finally, and definitively, ''a state of life that calls for another way of living.''

The score is presented here in its complete form, starting with pipe organ and the basso profundo of singer Albert de Ruiter singing the title of the film. The music ends almost 75 minutes later with a choir singing ''Prophecies'' which are translated as:

* ''If we dig precious things from the land, we will invite disaster.''
* ''Near the day of Purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky.''
* ''A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans.''

This new release represents the first time that the full presentation of the music is heard on vinyl. The LP release of this Glass score was released in the 1980s in a severely truncated form with only 6 tracks and 45 minutes of music. This newly re-mastered recording features 12 tracks and over 76 minutes of music including the original sound-effects and additional music used in the film.

This new double album/double gatefold release includes images from the film. In 2019, Harvard Film Archive acquired the Godfrey Reggio film archive and is currently in the process of documenting and digitizing the collection. As part of this release, Orange Mountain Music acquired high resolution stills from the film to use as images on this release.

This version of Koyaanisqatsi is the most complete and representative recording of the soundtrack to this seminal film. Performed by the Philip Glass Ensemble along with a full roster of studio musicians conducted by Michael Riesman, the music director of the Philip Glass Ensemble since 1974, and produced by Glass’s longtime music producer Kurt Munkacsi.

1978 was a banner year for Dexter Gordon. Maxine Gordon (then Gregg) had started to manage his career and proved to be a one-woman tour de force. In signing with Columbia boosted his career. He moved to New York, forming and grooming his own band all at age 52! The wonderful quartet included George Cables on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums. This November 1978 concert at the Châteauvallon Jazz Festival highlights Dexter's joyous and fiery mood, peppering his solos with outrageous quotes from other songs.

Following last year’s Humble Pie Official Bootleg Collection Volume 1 double LP comes the Official Bootleg Collection Volume 2, curating rare and previously (officially) unreleased live shows that were illicitly recorded between 1971 and 1981.

Emerging from the remnants of The Small Faces, Humble Pie formed in 1969 when guitarist and vocalist Steve Marriott joined forces with Peter Frampton, drummer Jerry Shirley and bassist Greg Ridley, and began their ascent to conquering the theatres and then arenas of North America, culminating in 1972’s double live Performance: Rockin’ The Filmore album. Frampton left in 1971 for a highly successful solo career, replaced by Colosseum's Clem Clempson, and it was this line-up that was captured in New York in 1971, at one of Clem’s first shows with the Pie. The extemporisations of Performance: Rockin’ The Filmore became the basis for much of Humble Pie's live repertoire for the remainder of the 1970s, but this 1971 New York show does include their unique take on Eddie Cochran's 'C’mon Everybody' and 'I Wonder' from the soon to be released Smokin' LP.

Side Two finds the Pie backed up by the soulful vocals of The Blackberries--Venetta Fields, Clydie King & Billie Barnum==who appear on “Oh La-De-Da”, ‘” Don’t Need No Doctor” and “30 Days In The Hole.”

Humble Pie split in 1975 following their Street Rats LP, but not before Side Three’s Philadelphia show on March 15, 1975, featuring ‘Four Day Creep’ and ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’.
The Pie would eventually reform for 1980's “On To Victory” comeback record, this time with a line-up featuring Bobby Tench from the Jeff Beck Group on guitar and vocals and bassist Anthony “Sooty” Jones.

Side Four from Privates Club, N.Y.C. on March 25, 1981 features the epic 23 minute take of ‘30 Days in the Hole’ / ‘I Walk on Gilded Splinters’.

Housed in a gatefold sleeve, with plenty of rare memorabilia, the booklet features an essay based on new interviews with Pie drummer Jerry Shirley.

Acnalbasac Noom -- meant to be the German-English-American avant-pop group Slapp Happy's second album -- was originally recorded in 1973 but did not see release until 1980. Recorded with legendary German art-rock group Faust accompanying the Slapp Happy core of Anthony Moore on keyboards, Peter Blegvad on guitar, and Dagmar Krause on vocals, and with Faust's brilliant producer Uwe Nettelbeck at the helm, Acnalbasac Noom was initially rejected by the group's label Polydor as not being commercial enough. As a result, the band left Polydor, signed with Virgin, and released this album's tracks in a completely re-recorded version for their official second album, the self-titled Slapp Happy from 1974. Far from being simply an "alternate version" of that album, Acnalbasac Noom is a completely different beast from Slapp Happy. Simultaneously low-key and high-brow, the versions found here are damaged art-pop par excellence; the combination of Slapp Happy and Faust create a sound that defies era, sounding at times like anything from the artsier side of their contemporaries in the British folk-rock movement to damaged '90s indie-pop, the more accessible end of Yoko Ono's 1970s to an alternative universe Lynchian cabaret-lounge act. In the late 90s in Hip Hop, all eyes were on the South and the Down South sound reigned supreme. Few groups were as hot as Memphis’ Three 6 Mafia. CrazyNDaLazDayz was a regional scorcher when it dropped in 1999, released under the group name Tear Da Club Up Thugs, but essentially a Three 6 Mafia full-length as core Three 6 members DJ Paul, Juicy J and Lord Infamous all contribute to the project. The record went on to be certified Gold and Three 6 Mafia went on to win an Academy Award for their contribution to Hustle & Flow.

CrazyNDaLazDayz continues to have an impact to this day. A cut Juicy J first pulled together while still in high school, “Slob On My Knob”, was utilized in A$AP Ferg’s hit “Plain Jane.” In addition, the cut is interpolated into G-Eazy’s most successful cut to date, “No Limit.” CrazyNDaLazDayz has never seen a commercial vinyl release (when originally released, only promo vinyl was issued). For Record Store Day, Get On Down brings you this oft overlooked and definitely in need of being revisited portion of Three 6 Mafia’s legacy.

Strum & Thrum: The American Jangle Underground 1983-1987 is the first volume of Captured Tracks’ new venture into compilations – Excavations. Dedicated to compiling forgotten music from the 1970s – 1990s that has a connection to Captured Tracks’ sound and aesthetic, this series will bridge the past to our current roster and showcase the kinds of sounds that inspire us.

As an American label, we’ve often wondered why British, Aussie, and Kiwi indie rock from the ‘80s has had the most influence on modern acts and the collector’s market. Outside of bands like R.E.M., the Rain Parade, the Dream Syndicate, and a few others, most of these bands received little attention from national or international press outlets and markets. The acts on this compila- tion have a true DiY spirit that lead many of these bands to self-record and self-release within tiny local scenes in small cities and college towns across America.

Strum & Thrum aims to shed light on this forgotten era of jangly, melodic rock music that emerged from the ashes of post punk and helped kick start the indie rock boom of the early ‘90s that continues to this day. Indeed, many artists featured on Strum & Thrum went on to be part of this boom – Archer Prewitt from the Sea & Cake, Jon Ginoli from Pansy Division, Ric Menck from Velvet Crush, Brent Rademaker from Beachwood Sparks, Barbara Manning, and more went on to be in well known bands in the ‘90s.

Spread across two LPs, Strum & Thrum includes an 80+ page booklet with an extensive oral history of the ‘80s indie scene, an introduction by Captured Tracks label head Mike Sniper, and tons of archival images and ephemera. Long live the jangle underground!

The Verlaines are a rock band from Dunedin, New Zealand. Formed in 1981 by principle songwriter Graeme Downes, the band was named after the French poet Paul Verlaine, from from whom Television’s Tom Verlaine also lifted his stage name. The Verlaines are also one of the pioneers of the cult-followed 'Dunedin Sound' which was lifted from the explosion of talent coming out of their hometown in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The Chills, The Clean, Bailter Space, The Bats, The 3D's and the Straitjacket Fits all came roaring out of this University town.

The Verlaines’ angular sound made them favorites of bands like Pavement, R.E.M., Superchunk, Cat Power, The Mountain Goats, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, Lou Barlow and many others. Uncut Magazine suggested that "before the mp3 replaced the flexidisc, the three axes of the international indie-pop underground were Olympia WA, Glasgow, and Dunedin, New Zealand." From 1985 to 2012, The Verlaines have released eleven albums, most of which are on the legendary New Zealand label Flying Nun. There was a brief period in the early to mid 90's when the band released albums for Slash and Columbia Records, only to go back to Flying Nun for 2012's Untimely Mediations.

Dunedin Spleen is The Verlaines’ first studio album in over seven years. Featuring a blistering and brilliant nineteen tracks, this double-LP will be exclusively released on Record Store Day 2020 via North Carolina indie Schoolkids Records. The Violets were a punk/indie band from Athens, GA, mainly active from 1988-1992. The band was best known for their song 'I Hate The Grateful Dead,” which briefly charted on the College CMJ charts in 1991. That original 7" record is a big collectors item these days and the song has remained quite popular, even among Grateful Dead purists, who view the song as a humorous poke at the obsessive fan culture that still surrounds the Dead. Back in the 1990s Grateful Dead -based merchandise shops were even known to carry the record.

Their socially aware track “Forsyth” called out the racial inequality and disparity found in Forsyth County GA in the late 1980s, a place known to be hostile to people of color and homosexuals.

Both tracks are included in this collection of ten of the Violets’ most memorable songs, several recorded in the early ‘90s by David Barbe (Sugar, Mercyland), all chosen by fans and the band themselves. 500 copies are being released for Record Store Day, hand numbered and pressed on violet vinyl.

Detroit in the late 1990s was a scary and lawless place. Red lights were taken as a suggestion and gangs ran rampant in the city.

Enter The Wildbunch.

The band that later became the Electric Six got together in 1996 with a shared passion for high energy rock and roll music. Playing for years around local venues The Gold Dollar and The Old Miami, the group started to hit it big when they were forced to change their name to Electric Six after a rap group, The Wildbunch, threatened legal action. Their hit singles "Gay Bar" and "Danger! High Voltage" were two of the biggest hits of the garage rock boom, but the versions included on E6's 'Fire' album are the most well known.

During The Wildbunch's existence, they recorded one studio album, Rock Empire. Pressed on vinyl for the first time, and its first release since its local CD-R only release, this deluxe reissue features remastered audio and new inserts that chronicle the entirety of the group's existence, sure to excite garage rock fans along with fans of the Electric Six, who are still performing to sold out crowds today.

Hopes have been dashed, but the men still love music. Subtitled Back To The Egg, the Fellows return to where it all began, with one last roundup at the infamous Egg Studios, Seattle WA, produced once again by Conrad Uno (who also struck gold with The Presidents Of The United States Of America). When heard that Uno was closing up his studio and retiring from the limelight, the band grabbed a last weekend to record a couple songs (they had THREE in various shape of decomposition). A couple days later there were 17 tracks, of which 12 were deemed PERFECT. 'Gear Summer 2013' is Everything-Is-Falling-Apart-In-Three-Minutes, and was planned to be a smash summer single ' in 2013 (amazingly, things have gotten worse). The Buzzcocks and Rezillos concur. In 1988, Frank Zappa released the first installment of You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore, a 6 volume series (12 discs total) consisting of hand picked live performances from his legendary Vault. The series was intended for CD, a relatively new medium at the time. Since vinyl & cassette were still considered the main formats, FZ created this sampler to promote the project & provide motivation to embrace the CD series. The material for the sampler was culled from tracks ranging from 1969 to 1984. The original ‘88 vinyl was mastered by Bernie Grundman. This 2020 collector’s edition is again mastered by Bernie from the original 1630 Digital Master & pressed on 180gram individual red & yellow transparent vinyl by Pallas in Germany.
