The Blind Boys of Alabama are among the most premier artists of the gospel world. Bela Fleck is among the most premier artists of the bluegrass world. Together, they have earned 20 Grammy Awards and scores of other accolades. For RSD Drops 2021, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Bela Fleck have joined together for a special 7" 45RPM vinyl release.

On the A-side, they cover "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free", the Billy Taylor and Dick Dallas classic made famous by Nina Simone. Brainiac proudly hailed From Dayton Ohio. They put it on their T-shirts and proclaimed it religiously from the stage everywhere they went. On this double album by the same name, is the band's history unfolding from a new lens, chronologically through remastered singles, covers, and previously unreleased tracks over sides A and B. Sides C and D present a never before heard (or even torrented) example of their bombastic live experience: a concert recording from the legendary Blind Pig in Champaign-Urbana. The gatefold artwork contains a band family tree of sorts, centering Brainiac to many of their local contemporaries as well as various pictures from the band's personal collections. The music of Brainiac ended with the death of frontman Tim Taylor in 1997. Offered here is a glimpse into the working mind of Taylor as he susses out tunes and sound experiments in their rawest form, mostly alone with a four track in his mother's attic. Some are mere sketches. Many never again saw the light of day, or morphed so much they are more like distant cousins of future songs. Some of the more interesting Brainiac songs, like Fucking With The Altimeter, Silver Iodine, or Strung, were elevated from the original four and eight track demos later in the studio environment. Attic Tapes serves as a blueprint for how these types of tunes developed. The entire program is stitched together like a distorted dream. Jumping from one scene to the next, it progresses through all four sides in a historically linear fashion, from the very early days through to the final rehearsals.

While this is not an official Brainiac album, it begins to feel akin to what a Brainiac record might sound like if it were produced by neighbor and Guided by Voices raconteur Robert Pollard. Inside the release are some historically related liner notes written by guitarist John Schmersal giving further insight into the origins and backdrop of the demos and the time they were created.

The two-time Edison-Award winning blues band from the Netherlands, Barrelhouse, will release their complete live recording with Albert Collins as part of RSD Drops 2021.

The year is 1978 and Barrelhouse invited Albert Collins to join them for a TV show. At the time he was not as well known in Europe as he would later become. It became his first appearance on national TV outside of the United States. He returned to the Netherlands later that year for a short tour and the recording of this live album. “Albert Collins and his manager Dick Shurman arrived on the airport, he brought a flightcase with his Fender Telecaster, a packet of spare strings and a suitcase. On stage he was a star, off stage he was one of the band, wanted to travel in the Barrelhouse 9 seater.”

This RSD Drops release on 180g Translucent Red/Solid White/Black vinyl contains an extra, never-pressed-to-vinyl, track “Things I Used To Do”, which completes the concert by Collins and Barrelhouse on December 28, 1978.

At The Village Gate is a live album by jazz guitarist Larry Coryell, the “Godfather of Fusion”, recorded on January 21 and 22, 1971 at the Village Gate in New York City. It was released by Vanguard Records. Sadly, far too few people knew of this album at the time as its distribution was limited, but it’s a record that was recorded so well it could easily be considered a live studio release, and one that never fails to open eyes or expand horizons. It’s interesting to note that Larry’s wife Julie sings for the first time on this outing and that’s his son featured on the album jacket.

In March 1998 Touch and Go Records released Ocean Songs, the fourth album by Australian trio The Dirty Three. In 2005 the band were joined onstage by Nick Cave (on piano) to perform the album in its entirety at ATP festival in New York, a show that since has developed into near mythic status.  When Jeffrey Dean Foster watched the Black Lives Matter protests following George Floyd’s murder last summer, he wanted to address the cruelty that prompted them. The result was “I’m Starting to Bleed,” a pastiche of late-period Bowie and “Cruisin’”-era Smokey Robinson infused with a creeping sense of dread. The remixed, reimagined “I’m Starting to Bleed (Pastoral)” strips the song back to its studs, trading the original instrumentation for guitars orchestrated by 1970s Film Stock. “When Was the Last Time” was recorded as a bare-bones acoustic performance at The Ramkat in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Don Dixon suggested making a record out of it, noting that Johnny Cash magicked some of his TV appearances into album tracks. Dixon and Foster’s additions of drums, bass, electric guitar and strings, Beth McKee’s Wurlitzer, and Marti Jones’ pristine backing vocals turned it into a panoramic pop song. “Tell Somebody” is a wall of sound full of sonic nods to The Who, Big Star, and Teenage Fanclub at their Bandwagonesque best. “Headin’ Home” is a tossed-off ode to pandemic isolation, like the Flamin’ Groovies reluctantly following a stay-at-home-order. Dixon and Mitch Easter pulled the mixes together, while Dave McNair (Bowie, Dylan, Patti Smith) mastered the record. The I’m Starting to Bleed EP probably couldn’t have been made outside of the disorienting cauldron of the past year. Foster is currently working on his next full-length album.
Proceeds from this release, and three others in this series support The Shalom Project (an organization that supports NC families in need).
This is a regional release and though it’s available to all RSD-participating stores, it will primarily be available at stores in North Carolina.

Another grunge metal classic! Gruntruck's bloodlines were impeccable; the band was founded (where else?) in Seattle by two members of the pioneering grunge band Skin Yard, vocalist Ben McMillan and drummer Norman Scott. While in Skin Yard, Scott also briefly joined Soundgarden, and collaborated with Chris Cornell on a lesser-known band, the low frequency power trio Bass Truck. Lead guitarist Tommy Niemeyer from metal thrashers The Accüsed and bassist Tim Paul, previously of PDX hardcore punks Final Warning, rounded out the initial, classic line-up, which is what you hear on this 1992 record, which was produced by the band and fellow ex-Skin Yard member (and go-to grunge producer) Jack Endino. Previously released on vinyl only in Europe and Brazil (!), original copies of Push are virtually impossible to find, which is too bad; this record offered a mesmerizing mix of atonal riffage and hooky tunes like the single "Tribe." This is its first-ever domestic vinyl release, and we're giving it a real "Push"; we've added two never-on-LP tracks ("Crucifunkin'" and "Flesh Fever") that the band recorded in between the sessions for Push and their first album, Inside Yours, and expanded the release to a killer 2-LP set (sequenced by Jack Endino himself) housed inside a gatefold jacket. This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hooverphonics’ debut album A New Stereophonc Sound. Music On Vinyl in cooperation with Sony Music and Alex Callier are releasing four Hooverphonic remix EPs. Each represents a Hooverphonic album: A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular, Blue Wonder Power Milk, The Magnificent Tree and Presents Jackie Cane.

Alex Callier selected the best remixes of their songs for each remix EP. The first, A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular remixes is available as part of RSD Drops. Only 2000 individually numbered copies on solid purple are pressed. (The other three are scheduled to be released later in 2021.

Hooverphonic are a Belgian band that formed in October 1995. Though originally categorized as a trip hop group, they quickly expanded their sound to the point where they could no longer be described as a lone genre, but rather encompass alternative, electronica, electropop, rock, and a mixture of others. The band originally called themselves Hoover, but later changed their name to Hooverphonic after discovering other groups were already using the Hoover name and to avoid any legal issues with the vacuum cleaner company.

Since their formation, Hooverphonic's lineup consisted of bassist Alex Callier, guitarist Raymond Geerts, and various lead singers. Geike Arnaert (1997–2008, 2020-present) has recently re-joined the band.

Hooverphonic were supposed to represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They will instead represent Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021.

The band achieved international recognition through the inclusion of the Stereophonic track "2Wicky" on the soundtrack to Bernardo Bertolucci's 1996 film Stealing Beauty. "2Wicky" also appeared on the soundtracks of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Heights. The track's main riff is sampled from Isaac Hayes' recording of the 1960s hit "Walk On By".

“Inhaler” is, not least thanks to those wonderfully fanning out guitars, still a missed world hit.

Remix duties are fulfilled by drum ‘n bass producer Dj Pulse, owner of the Creative Wax label, and the late Hector Zazou. Both gave some LTJ Bukem-esque vibes to “Inhaler” and “2 Wicky”.

Furthermore, Alex Callier and the band re-recorded both songs and added some extra strings to “Inhaler”.

Bobo Jenkins’ first recordings came out on the Chess, Fortune and Boxer labels in the 1950s. This 12 song LP compiles his 1970s output of incredibly raw and stripped-down blues. The tracks were recorded using a revolving door of Detroit musicians during late night/all night sessions in Bobo’s makeshift Detroit recording studio/record shop and were originally released on his own Big Star Records. Land developed his hard bop playing with the Max Roach/Clifford Brown band into a personal, modern style; often rivalling Clifford Brown's instrumental ability with his own inventive and whimsical solos. Born in Houston and grew up in San Diego he started playing at the age of 16. He made his first recording as the leader of the Harold Land All-Stars for Savoy Records in 1949. In 1954 he joined the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet, with whom he was at the forefront of the hard-bop/bebop movement. He moved to Los Angeles in 1955 and played with Curtis Counce, led his own groups, and co-led groups with Bobby Hutcherson, Blue Mitchell, and Red Mitchell. From the '70s onwards his style showed the influence of John Coltrane. In the early '80s through to the early '90s he worked regularly with the Timeless All Stars; a group sponsored by Timeless jazz records. The group consisted of Land on tenor, Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass, Billy Higgins on drums, Curtis Fuller on trombone and Bobby Hutcherson on vibes.

Over his career he was a sideman on albums from Roy Ayers, Bill Evans, Ella Fitzgerald, Freddie Hubbard, Thelonious Monk, Wes Montgomery, Donald Byrd, Dinah Washington and countless others.

The project was born out of Lupe pulling a beat off of Twitter, posted by Kaelin Ellis with the caption, "get this to Lupe". Lupe recorded a rap over the beat and posted the new recording back on Twitter within an hour of Kaelin posting the instrumental. The two conversed over social media and agreed to work on more music, which led to the HOUSE EP being turned around within 3-4 weeks while quarantined during the Covid pandemic. The project features narration from longtime friend of Lupe and international fashion designer and entrepreneur, Virgil Abloh (Louis Vuitton, Off White). The title of the EP is HOUSE because they recorded the entire project while in the house (due to Covid). Artwork for the EP is an original painting of Philip Johnson's iconic Glass House, and liner notes were written by the painter's son who is a good friend of Lupe’s. Previously available on cassette.

In 2002, while the Church was on a short hiatus, Marty Willson-Piper (The Church, All About Eve, Moat) and childhood friend/producer Dare Mason (Placebo, The Church) collaborated to record under the name Noctorum for the first time. The result was their debut album, Sparks Lane, which immediately turned into absolute classic and cult favorite amongst hard-core fans. The band is delighted to release this classic for the first time ever on vinyl for RSD Drops 2021. Pressed on grey vinyl.

The cover art by the late Greg Daville was composite images put together to form an unlikely reality. The device featured in the picture is called an orrery and is a real thing ' a working mechanical model of our solar system.
