The hard-hitting, melodic heavy metal band Alcatrazz celebrate RSD Drops 2021 with the release of a colored double vinyl edition of their latest studio offering, Born Innocent. The 13-track opus, having previously only been available on CD and digital formats and never on vinyl will be a must-have collectible for anyone who considers themselves a fan of rock (pun intended!)

Their first studio venture since 1986’s Dangerous Game. Alongside the unique vocal prowess and range of star frontman and founding member Graham Bonnet, Born Innocent also features fellow founding members Jimmy Waldo and Gary Shea. And from the classic album art, featuring the mighty rock itself, Born Innocent is a journey into the sort of heavy, melodic and supremely articulated hard rock that is a cornerstone of the likes of Rainbow and the Michael Schenker Group, territory Alcatrazz successfully strode in the ‘80s before going on hiatus.

Born Innocent was produced by Jimmy Waldo with Giles Lavery and mixed and mastered by Andy Haller and features many former stars from Graham's long career. Guest appearances include Chris Impellitteri, who wrote the music and played all guitars on the arpeggio-powered “Born Innocent”, with Bonnet’s vocals soaring to old-school heights, as did Bob Kulick for the majestic “I Am The King”. Virtuoso Japanese guitar maestro Nozomu Wakai similarly wrote and played guitars on the double-kick steel-plated Irish warrior ode “Finn McCool”, while the six-string legend that is Steve Vai wrote “Dirty Like The City”, with Bonnet once again powerfully hitting notes that are beyond the business of most humans.

As fans will immediately hear, Alcatrazz are back doing what only they can do with Born Innocent, delivering quality hard rock with genuine storyteller lyrics, virtuoso performances and an added layer of modern ‘heavy’ that underscores the melodic excellence. Raleigh NC’s The Backsliders were formed in 1992 by Steve Howell and Chip Robinson, rock ‘n’ roll dudes playing country-tinged tunes with just the right amount of Don’t Give A Damn attitude. The original line-up of Chip Robinson (lead vocal, guitar, electric 12-string guitar), Steve Howell (harmony vocal, lead guitar), Danny Kurtz (bass), Jeff “JD” Dennis (drums), came back together in 2012 with new bandmate Greg Rice (keyboards). With engineer John Plymale of Overdub Lane at the board, they wasted no time in recording the RALEIGHWOOD (EP), featuring their hardcore honky-tonk and unmistakable swagger. Steve Howell describes the writing of these songs: “Headlights” was written in the spirit of late ‘60s/early ‘70s California Country Rock with peyote and red wine as the chief inspirations. “You Can Be My Baby Now” is the haze of a long weekend listening to Big Star and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. “Nightfalls” was written after being haunted by a ghost that never told me her name. Danny and JD kicked it up into the southern soul stratosphere. “Forever and Ever” is the result of Neil Young and Crazy Horse running thick through my teenage veins. I can still taste it! “Twang”, well... nothing says attitude better than a twangy Gretsch guitar right between the eyes.” The attitude of the original lineup is still there, though they may not be the same band that burned up the road all those years before, they still have something to say, something to prove, and something to be.

Proceeds from this release, and three others in this series support The Shalom Project (an organization that supports NC families in need).
This is a regional release and though it’s available to all RSD-participating stores, it will primarily be available at stores in North Carolina.

After the release of the Beat Farmers’ successful 1985 debut album Tales Of The New West, the band did a tour of the UK and Europe and while there recorded a six song EP originally only released in the UK, and never on vinyl in the US. Glad ’N' Greasy features the original members of this alt-country band that was an influence on many bands and artists in the much larger Americana movement that followed.  Many consider the six songs on Glad ’N’ Greasy to be the Beat Farmers’ finest hour.  The reissue comes in a gatefold jacket with photos and notes written by the band.

Award-winning arts journalist and critic Mark Stryker contributes the main essay alongside remembrances by American journalist, educator, author, activist and friend of Roy Brooks Herb Boyd, alto saxophone legend Charles McPherson (who grew up with Roy Brooks), Louis Hayes (who got Roy the gig with Horace Silver) and more. The project came about as a desire by Reel to Real Recordings to make a positive contribution to Black Lives Matter. Understanding is our celebration of the talent, courage and spirit of the Black musicians who created a timeless and universal art, with the recognition that the injustices of 50 years ago are still with us. Proceeds will go directly to The Detroit Sound Conservancy. The album is produced with the cooperation of Cecil McBee and Carlos Garnett and the estates of Roy Brooks, Harold Mabern and Woody Shaw.

About the artist: In his younger days in Detroit, Brooks started off drumming with Yusef Lateef. He played with Horace Silver from 1959-64, including on the album Song for My Father; in 1963 he released his first album as a leader. Following this he freelanced in New York City through the 1960s and early 1970s, playing with Lateef again (1967-70), Sonny Stitt, Lee Morgan, Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker, Junior Cook, Blue Mitchell, Charles McPherson, Pharoah Sanders (1970), Wes Montgomery, Dollar Brand, Jackie McLean, James Moody (1970-72), Charles Mingus (1972-73), and Milt Jackson. His 1970 album The Free Slave featured Cecil McBee and Woody Shaw. Later in 1970 he joined Max Roach's ensemble M'Boom, and in 1972 put together the ensemble The Artistic Truth.

Del Casher may not be a household name, but you’ve undoubtedly heard his music. He was a member of the famous Wrecking Crew, played on Lawrence Welk, recorded Frank Zappa’s first demo, and even backed Elvis Presley on film. His inventions include the Wah-Wah pedal and the Ecco-Fonic, influencing the development of electric guitar playing. In 1978, Casher was impressed by Bill Conti's top selling score for Rocky, and set out to make an album with original compositions of disco and jazz/funk inspired by the film. With a series of tunes written, he gathered some of the top studio players in Hollywood including Billy Preston, Stan Worth, and members of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show band. The working title for this album in the making was called “Music Inspired By Rocky And Other Compositions”. A film company who had acquired the rights to Sylvester Stallone's 1970 debut "The Party At Kitty And Stud's" heard the music and immediately recognized it as the perfect fit for their rebranded “Italian Stallion” film release. Though the score was never released outside of the film, it generated lots of interest in the early 2000’s when the internet became a widespread phenomenon, and fans began recording the audio off of the film themselves. The soundtrack for Italian Stallion stands on its own as a musical masterpiece. Over 40 years later, with the help of ORG Music, Del Casher dug up his original master tapes and assembled a record’s worth of material for the soundtrack’s first ever release. Italian Stallion will make its long overdue debut with a vinyl pressing, exclusively for RSD 2021.

If Dave Davies did nothing more than create the slash-and-burn power chords of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" he'd earn a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As it is, the younger Davies brother has accomplished much more. His first studio album in over 20 years finds Ray's frequently overshadowed sibling reviving that rather charming '70s device, the concept album--the plot here revolving around extraterrestrial visitation and brain implantation. Davies brings the idea of benign aliens a little closer in a collection that recalls some of the best trends of the '60s and '70s. He uses a rock template that harkens back to post-Tommy Who ("The Lie"), Mott the Hoople ("Whose Fooling Who"), and Deep Purple ("It Ain't Over 'Till It's Done"), sounding rather anachronistic as a result. The songs are engaging and show Davies to be a writer of considerable skill and wit, but they're somewhat stuck in the way-back machine.

Miles Davis had a deep love and respect for boxing, seeing deep parallels between “the sweet science” and his own relationship with music. One of Miles’ favorites of his own recordings was the 1971 soundtrack to the Bill Cayton documentary about Jack Johnson, and he was inspired by the political and racial subtext of the legendary boxer’s saga.  Culled from the celebrated expanded project The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions released in 2003, and name-checking a number of pugilistic legends (“Ali,” “Sugar Ray,” “Duran,” “Johnny Bratton”), these funk-infused recordings rock harder than anything else that Miles put to tape. Bobbie’s journey from country singer-songwriter to blue eyed soul diva stopped off at a hitherto unknown destination along the way. Before she arrived at Muscle Shoals to work her magic with the late great Rick Hall, Bobbie cut a laid back album of classic and contemporary jazz tunes that was abandoned before it had chance to see the light of day. This was a shame, as Bobbie proves herself as adept in this genre as in any other. This self-produced collection first saw the light of day on the Bobbie Gentry boxset, but this lost album deserves to have its own separate release and what better format than vinyl? The set exudes a sophisticated and intimate late-night vibe mostly featuring Bobbie alone with her guitar accompanied by a bass player; occasionally there is a whisper of strings from Jimmie Haskell who famously composed the cello and violin arrangement on Ode to Billie Joe. Gentry fans will find much to love in Bobbie’s short lived but brilliant turn as a jazz singer. Peggy Lee was in top form in 1955, in every aspect of her career. As a vocalist, she was at her peak. Pete Kelly’s Blues (her best acting role) and Lady And The Tramp (she co-wrote six songs and provided the voices for four characters) were both set to be released. That same year, she recorded 49 selections as radio transcriptions for the World Program Service. These recordings were not released to the public, but used by radio stations with unexpected time to fill. The music is more jazz-oriented than many of her Decca recordings of the time. Lee’s cool but inwardly heated voice is joined by frequent collaborators, pianist Gene DiNovi, guitarist Bill Pitman, Bob Whitlock or Don Prell on bass, drummer Larry Bunker, Ramon “Ray” Rivera on congas, harpist Stella Castellucci, and trumpeter Pete Candoli. This series compiles the best selections from those 1955 recordings, beginning with 14 tunes on this first volume. Love, led by the brilliant and complicated Arthur Lee, is considered one of the most influential American rock bands of all time. The 2015 reissue of their album Reel to Real showed the band at the height of their rock/soul powers, and included twelve previously-unreleased outtakes from the original sessions. I remember the heat that day burning through my JCPenney’s suit that I bought just the day before for our show at Avondale Brewing Company in Birmingham. 100 degree temperature outside in the dead of summer in Alabama is not uncommon. I was pouring sweat alongside people who had just met that day for the first time to play a show under the name St. Paul & The Broken Bones. I hated my name being in the band’s name but who cared at that point, it was just a fling. Now, over 8 years later, we built a career out of it.

During this pandemic, I have gotten awfully nostalgic. For a time, we would travel constantly and shows started blending together. The bar for the best show/best audience was just so high. That endorphin rush was taken for granted. The first moment we had to play a socially distanced show, I knew exactly what we should do. Play a show at Avondale Brewery and do our debut album in full. Something I would never had done if the pandemic had not happened. Mainly because I am a perpetual motion kind of person and don’t like looking back. The beauty though of looking back at the beginning was realizing all the great people that helped us turn a summer fling into an actual career. From TT Management to Single Lock Records to High Road Touring. It was such a beautiful time. Here is the live recording from that show that night. I hope y’all enjoy.

Shintaro Sakamoto, the former frontman of legendary psych/rock band Yura Yura Teikoku, is a Japanese music composer, producer, writer and singer based in Tokyo. New 12-inch EP is the latest release on Records Store Day 2021, a collection of his new songs recorded during the pandemic, available on vinyl.

Tracks include "The Feeling Of Love" - a boogie number that features a tremolo guitar, an exotic steel guitar, and a robotic voice with a light mid-tempo beat, with lyrics depicting the everyday life within the　extraordinary situation. "Obscure Nightclub" is a ballad with a bottom heavy beat, a steel guitar, a clear flute sound, and an insect-voiced chorus. While portraying the scene of a nightclub, he sings about his　feelings under the pandemic. The B-side features "By Swallow Season" - a mid-tempo jazzy boogie track, with sentimental lyrics over a floating mellow wah-wah guitar and melancholy saxophone. "How many years does it take to return to normal~", Sakamoto sings, reflecting on the situation. The EP ends with "Don't Tinker With History", a boogie-funk song which opens with a James Brown-like guitar riff. An ultimate soul classic in contemporary Japan, the echoey steel guitar and the dry strumming blends in with the tight groove, along with his straightforward lyrics like "People and events that were pretended it didn't exist".

Chris Stamey’s collaboration with The Fellow Travelers is inspired by the intimate small combo sound of the late ‘50s and ‘60s. “I wrote most of it in the dark of winter, in the wee hours of the morning, that magical time when the whole wide world is fast asleep,” Stamey explains. The title track is something of an homage to John Coltrane, through blue-colored glasses. Some of the songs are clearly Tin Pan Alley-ish in their musical vocabularies, including the jolly, stride-piano-style exposition of “Come Home To Me” and the bittersweet sixth chords of “It Must Be Raining Somewhere.” “I Don’t Think Of You” explores Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb’s harmonic vocabulary. “In A Minor Key” reflects Stamey’s admiration for Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight,” while his summer-long obsession with Antonio Carlos Jobim is found on “Je Ne Sais Quoi”. Vocalist Brett Harris’s warm tenor shines throughout the set, with Ramune Martin featured as well. Chris Stamey has delivered an inspired album for this Record Store Day release.
Proceeds from this release, and three others in this series support The Shalom Project (an organization that supports NC families in need).

Grunge metal greatness! This 1993 record marked Tad's major label debut (on the Giant imprint), and for it the band brought in Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis to produce. The result was a more focused album than Tad's previous outings, laced with piledriver riffs 'n' hooks and some wicked humor, even as the band grappled with such disturbing topics as Ted Bundy and child abduction. Behind The Dykes 2 - More Beat, Blues And Psychedelic Nuggets From The Lowlands 1966 - 1971 is the follow-up to the hugely successful first edition, released for RSD Drops 2020. With each Trip, we unearth even more incredible bangers that somehow eluded popularity in their day For every classic rock mainstay like Black Sabbath and Grand Funk Railroad, there are hundreds of great bands who, for a variety of reasons, were previously lost to the sands of time. Brown Acid seeks to rectify that, with all tracks painstakingly licensed legitimately and ensuring that the original artists are paid. As the series editions grow higher into the double digits, here’s a quick lysergic drop to get you up to speed.

Zekes, led by the songwriting duo of brothers Lenny & Kenny Gayle, opens the collection with the slithering buzzsaw guitars and hard-rock howl of "Box", a monster that gives Blue Cheer a run for their leaden blues. The 1970 track is originally the B-side to the band’s “Leaving You” 45 rpm single on the Beverly Hills label.

The squealing guitar harmonies and Sabbath plod of Ash's "Midnight Wish” are a psychedelic prog-fest from 1971 by this Australian quartet, one of few bands with the foresight to have made a music video way back then. The Factory’s “Time Machine” serves ample Rod Serling sci-fi paranoia alongside an insistent guitar riff, reverb soaked drums and one of the most psychotic sounding vibrato vocal lines this side of The Trashmen’s “Surfin’ Bird.”

Daingerfield, Texas group Kanaan’s 1969 fuzz-drenched ripper “Leave It” is a rousing anthem of boogie rock groove and wailing vocals. You may be familiar with George Brigman's psychedelic punk masterpiece Jungle Rot, but you don't know Split until you've heard the charmingly disjointed bedroom-fi production of "Blowin' Smoke.”

Truth & Janey are well known for their incredible 1976 LP No Rest For The Wicked. But their proto-metal 45-only single “Midnight Horseman” released four years earlier is a fantastic, formerly long-lost wonder. Blizzard was Rod McClure's high school band, but you couldn't possibly guess that teenagers recorded this heavy slab of obscure Oklahoma rage in 1973, sounding like a hypothetical MC5/Hendrix collaboration.

Luke and the Apostles ain't no Xian group, even though this 45 is of biblical proportions. "Not Far Off" is a tight and slinky jam sure to give your significant other bedroom eyes. The Doors and Elektra Records' producer Paul Rothchild called the Luke and the Apostles LP the "greatest album [he] never got to make.”

Indiana rockers Ice’s stunning full length debut languished unreleased for 50 years until RidingEasy issued The Ice Age in 2020. Back in 1970, the band recorded 10 original songs at 8-Track Studios in Chicago, only to break up shortly thereafter. Two of the tracks were eventually released as a 45 in 1972, but confusingly under a different band name, Zukus! “Running High” deftly balances wayward psychedelic pop and troglodyte thunder.

Louisville, KY quartet Conception's excellent revision of Blue Cheer's "Babylon" adds heavy phaser effect on the guitar and a more driving rhythm to make the song entirely their own. Lead guitar and high harmony vocals by Charlie Day (not to be confused with the Sunny Philadelphian actor) are assertive and commanding as he implores listeners onward to hallucinogenic nirvana.

John Prine tributes have been common in the music world since well before the legendary songwriter passed away April 7, 2020, but Kiss My Ass Goodbye cuts a new path through Prine’s famous catalogue. You haven’t heard anything like the way homegrown Music City honky-tonker Mick Mullin sets the record straight with his reverent rewrite of the David Allan Coe classic “You Never Even Call Me By My Name” — which diehard Prine fans know was an uncredited Prine co-write with Steve Goodman. This Prine tribute may also be the first to feature a song that Prine himself covered, with a Blaze Foley classic performed by Nashville’s Justin and The Cosmics’ — the storied rock ‘n’ roll outfit of Deer Tick/Middle Brother producer Justin Collins. And it is most certainly the first to offer a hip-hop take on a Prine song, performed by Chicago-based Ifjams.

Portland-based Groove Family Records and Nashville’s Devil’s Tower Records have teamed up to release Kiss My Ass Goodbye, which also features original album art by sought-after Athens, Ga. visual artist Eli Saragoussi. Kindercore Vinyl is also a sponsor of this very special project. All proceeds from vinyl and digital sales will benefit the Nashville Rescue Mission, a charity chosen by the Prine family.

This double album on randomly colored vinyl stands to raise over $10,000 to help the homeless in Nashville.

The Timeless series captured the lasting impact of several artists on the world of hip-hop and beyond. Live, fully orchestrated performances by Ethiopia’s Mulatu Astatke and Brazil's Arthur Verocai bookended the incredible Suite For Ma Dukes, a tribute to James "J Dilla" Yancey, by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.

On Mochilla Presents Timeless: Suite for Ma Dukes Miguel Atwood-Ferguson pays tribute to Dilla by interpreting his music for a 60-piece orchestra featuring special guests Bilal, Dwele, Posdnuos, Talib Kweli, Karriem Riggins and more. This premiere performance left many in the
sold out crowd in tears. In attendance that night was Common, who commented “To hear J Dilla’s music expressed in that form just let me know once again how great he is. It moved me for real” with famed BBC personality Giles Petersen saying “That’s just about the most powerful thing I’ve heard. Brilliant.”
