All Them Witches are known for their loud and lengthy live shows. 2020 found the band releasing their critically acclaimed album, Nothing As The Ideal. An album release from this band would traditionally be followed by a lengthy 18-month tour across the globe, but due to an international pandemic, the band's touring plans were brought to a halt. This did not stop All Them Witches from assembling in a studio to broadcast a live set for their fans. The set was roundly received as an amazing performance and fans immediately inquired as to whether or not this show would be available on vinyl.

Chet Baker is highly regarded as one of jazz's greatest trumpet players, and he recorded numerous albums over his 35 year recording career. Recorded in 1969, Albert's House features eleven instrumental compositions by Steve Allen, who produced the recording session to assist Baker in restarting his career after a horrific dental injury in '68. The sessions feature an all-star group of players with Paul Smith on keyboards, Barney Kessel on guitar, Jim Hughart on bass and Frank Capp (of Wrecking Crew fame) on drums.

In 1969 -- some three years before his self-titled debut solidified his stature as a pre-eminent Fender bender -- Roy Buchanan signed with Polydor Records and began work on his first full-length platter. But it took 35 years before this material saw the light of day with the release of The Prophet: The Unreleased First Polydor Album on CD. Augmenting the 11-track running order that would have made up that disc, the single-CD package contained 30+ minutes of previously unreleased outtakes, including tunes documented at an aborted March of 1971 session. This stuff is every bit as good as the official Polydor releases; the medley of "After Hours"/"The Messiah Will Come Again," for instance, might even be better than the respective later versions of those songs that showed up on Roy's albums. Never before on vinyl, the Prophet comes in a two album set, pressed on orange and black "fire" vinyl (because you won't often encounter more fiery guitar work than what's here), housed in a gatefold jacket and limited to 2,500 copies worldwide.

When Madlib went to Brazil in 2002 with Mochilla to participate in the production of the Brazilintime documentary, his one mission was to meet Ivan “Mamao” Conti, the drummer of the legendary trio Azymuth. Madlib had made an Azymuth tribute record he wanted to play for him. On a rainy night in Rio, Mamao and Madlib went in the studio. Several hours later the rhythm tracks that make up Sujinho were laid and the process began.

Recorded in the throes of their Philadelphia folk-rock phase during the late ‘60s, this record is a collection of rare early recordings by Daryl Hall & John Oates, before their signing to Atlantic Records. One of rock ‘n’ roll's pioneers of shock rock, the indescribable Screamin' Jay Hawkins paved the way for music performance art and glam artists to come. His classic "I Put A Spell On You," included on this set, was banned from radio in 1956 for sexual overtones. His legendary performances had him dressed in gold and leopard costumes with props including rubber snakes, a smoking skull on a stick, and his signature coffin. Over his career he didn't record many studio albums. In 1972 he released "A Portrait Of A Man and His Woman." Long out-of-print, it was re-released on CD in 2001 as "My Little Shop Of Horrors," adding a recording of his signature hit, "I Put A Spell On You," which included cover versions of Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe," Fats Domino's "Please Don't Leave Me," and Jesse Belvin's "Guess Who."

Another amazing release from the official Jimi Hendrix “bootleg label” Dagger Records, this raw, direct to two-track, live recording from the Olympia Theatre in Paris was captured for French national radio and documents the Experience’s triumphant return to France almost one year from the date of their 1966 debut. In the late 1980s, the renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger John Hicks formed one of the most influential ensembles consisting out of musicians that had played music at the highest level all their lives and gained their status as both stand-alone artists and important sidemen. Each of them had participated in many of jazz's great moments and all shared the ability, documented on many albums, to inspire their fellow musicians to even greater heights. The ‘John Hicks Trio’ had several line-up changes over the years that included greats such as Clifford Barbaro (Strata East, Blue Note, Sun Ra Arkestra, Charles Tolliver), Clint Houston (Prestige, Nina Simone, Roy Ayers, Azar Lawrence), Curtis Lundy (Pharoah Sanders, Frank Morgan, Cole Porter), Marcus McLaurine (Muse, Verve, Weldon Irvine, Kool & The Gang) and Victor Lewis (Steve Grossman, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Cedar Walton, Chet Baker).

On this album (Is That So? from 1991) the trio consists out of some of the biggest and best players in the jazz, funk and soul scenes:

On piano we have the Atlanta based trio’s bandleader JOHN HICKS (1941-2006). He served as a leader on more than 30 albums and played as a sideman on more than 300 other recordings. After being taught piano by his mother, Hicks went on to study at Lincoln University of Missouri, Berklee College of Music, and the Julliard School. After playing with a number of different artists during the early '60s (including Oliver Nelson and being part of Pharoah Sanders’s first band) he joined Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers in 1964. In the early '70s he taught jazz history and improvisation at Southern Illinois University before resuming his career as a recording artist. Next to his many solo recordings for labels such as Strata East and Concord, Hicks would collaborate with all the big names in the scene, including Archie Shepp, Alvin Queen, Mingus and Curtis Lundy. In 2014 & 2015, J Dilla payed homage to John Hicks by sampling two of his songs.

On drums we have the legendary IDRIS MUHAMMAD (1939-2014) who to this day is still considered as one of the most influential drummers covering a multitude of genre-transcending styles. Born in New Orleans, he showed early talent as a percussionist and began his professional career while still a teenager, playing on Fats Domino’s ‘Blueberry Hill’. He then toured with Sam Cooke and would later go on to work with Curtis Mayfield. Next to his landmark solo recordings for Prestige Records, Idris would collaborate with iconic musicians and acts from the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Manu Dibango, Ahmad Jamal, Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Walter Bishop, Ceasar Frazier, Roberta Flack, Gato Barbieri, Nathan Davis, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Galt MacDermot, Lonnie Smith…and countless others. Idris Muhammad’s work was sampled by renowned performers such as Drake, Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim.

On bass we have RAY DRUMMOND (born 1946) who originated from Massachusetts. Drummond was a well-respected bass player (and a master of his instrument), composer, arranger, bandleader, educator and producer who was part of performances and recordings of renowned acts and artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Horace Tapscott, Art Farmer, George Coleman, Leon Thomas, Johnny Lytle, Freddie Hubbard, John Hicks, Houston Person, Toots Thielemans, Lalo Schifrin, Art Blakey…and many others!

The ‘Is That So?’ album was recorded at the legendary Studio 44 (Holland) in July 1990 and released on the Dutch label TIMELESS in 1991. On this amazing piece of work you’ll find ten majestic tracks (including an excellent Sonny Rollins cover-tune). The album was produced by John Hicks and Timeless Records owner Wim Wigt and is a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album.  In character, the band performs three ’80s covers at the Pen Gala, an event in which Ike (played by Paul Rudd) is using Marty's (played by Will Ferrell) money to buy expensive auction items for charity. The band also appear as extras in a bidding scene during which they watch the two comedy legends improv their lines back and forth. 

 Local Natives are releasing the four cover songs they recorded for the series as an EP, named for the location of the scenes they filmed with Rudd and Ferrell. Music From The Pen Gala 1983 is out now featuring covers of Roxy Music, Gerry Rafferty, Michael McDonald and 10cc comes on a special, limited edition run of  Music From The Pen Gala 1983 cassettes for sale exclusively during RSD Black Friday on November 26th.

Magma is one of the most influential of all French bands. They have left a legacy of music that defies any of the standard and convenient classifications of rock, operating instead in a realm of their own creation.

Matata (which means “trouble” in Swahili) was an African funk band who took nightclubs by storm and jammed with some of the biggest giants in soul, jazz and Latin music. The band had its roots in the Congo although it formed in Kenya in the mid-sixties. Matata was based around the famous ‘Starlight Club’ in Nairobi. The group retained elements of traditional music by incorporating instruments such as the ‘ngoma’ (a large drum) and an eight stringed guitar-harp called the ‘nyatiti’…this brought something different to their style and made for a unique sound. Each of the songwriters sang lead in their native tongues and this meant they used vocals in three African languages (next to the songs sung in English). As the sixties drew to an end Matata (sometimes also known as ‘Air Fiesta Matata’) were regulars on Kenyan television and enjoyed a national following.

In 1971 when the BBC held a competition to find the best band in Africa, Matata submitted a song and came in first. They were sent to visit London, performed at the BBC and stayed around to do some gigs (after years of playing at the ‘Starlight Club’ the band was tight and well-rehearsed). The timing was perfect because there was a serious cross-fertilisation taking place between musicians from many different genres and nationalities…and this brought such vibrancy to cultural life in the capital. Matata arrived in London just as Assagai and Osibisa – groups led by African musicians who also played a fusion of styles – released their debut albums, paving the way for their peers.

The band signed a two-album deal with the UK-based label President Records (who would go on to release Matata’s ‘Air Fiesta’ in 1972 & ‘Independence’ in 1974). Several singles also came out of this and Matata scored hits in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. With a wealth of material and a dynamic live act to its name they would play packed gigs every night. The group was a visual, as well as musical feast and quickly became favorites at several well-known London nightclubs. Tours were numerous and the band played all over the world including having residencies in the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Hong Kong & Germany (where they got the chance to jam with Miles Davis in Cologne). There would be no further Matata recordings and sadly the band split after releasing their second album. Luckily, we are left with the unique documents that are ‘Air Fiesta’ and ‘Independence’.
The album we are presenting you today (Independence from 1974) comes swinging right out the gate with a set of no less than TWELVE monster tunes. It’s a musical gumbo full of irresistible rhythms, punchy blasts, snappy vocal hooks, reverb-laden ‘Santana’ guitar solos, a little reggae and Afrobeat filled horn arrangements, plus everything else needed to get dancers working overtime. On ‘Independence’ the group leaned mightily on James Brown for their groove, and laid out a heavy, rock solid variation on JBs funk with an African percussion base of fluid congas and bongos at the core.

Independence is a quintessential record that every serious collector or fan needs to have in his/her collection. Matata’s marriage of percolating African rhythms delivered one butt-shaking, finger-popping club hit after another that can still fill a dance floor to this day. Hard funky soul with an Afrobeat backbone…it’s all about the grooves here!

Originally released in 1974 on President Records, Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the first official reissue of this seminal Afrobeat/Afrofunk album. In the late ‘90s, Wu-Tang Clan superstar RZA developed a new persona. Based on his birth name and the fact that he was branching out into more digital production, Bobby Diggs became Bobby Digital. As RZA himself put it, “My birth name is Bobby Diggs. So at the time, creatively, I felt like I was in a digital frame…. As Bobby Digital, I could use a character to describe some of the earlier days of my own life. Partying, bullshitting, going crazy, chasing women, taking drugs. It was a mixture of fiction and reality together to make a character I thought would be entertaining.”

RZA released Bobby Digital In Stereo in 1998 and it was certified Gold in a matter of months. INSEMINOID tells the story of a crew of interplanetary archaeologists who are threatened when an alien creature impregnates one of their members causing her to develop a psychosis and mutilate her colleagues one by one. INSEMINOID was directed by British filmmaker Norman J. Warren, known primarily for a series of late '70s-'80s horror films, including SATAN'S SLAVE, PREY, BLOODY NEW YEAR and the like and produced by Richard Gordon known for a variety of films but specializing in horror movies such as THE HAUNTED STRANGLER, FIEND WITHOUT A FACE, CORRIDORS OF BLOOD, and DEVIL DOLL. In 1968, Dusty Springfield was already an international superstar with fifteen hits under her belt for the Philips label when she decided it was time for a change. What followed was one of the most legendary and momentous label moves in pop music history: Dusty decamped to Atlantic Records, where, under the tutelage of Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin, she recorded one of the greatest albums of all time, Dusty in Memphis, and scored such indelible hits as 'Son-of-a Preacher Man' and 'The Windmills of Your Mind' before moving on to Philly soul ('A Brand New Me).

We at Real Gone Music have closely examined this crucial period in Dusty's career over the years, with three previous releases. But there remains one facet of her Atlantic period which has remained largely untouched: her singles. The Complete Atlantic Singles 1968-1971 presents the A and B-sides of all dozen singles she recorded for the label in their original mono single mixes, on vinyl for the first time in over 50 years (most of these single mixes weren't even available on compact disc until our recent CD release). Since 1995, the Squirrel Nut Zippers have sacked and plundered the old, weird America then sailed off to further distant lands. They have used New Orleans as their hideout and base of operations. Jean-Lafitte-like the hide in the lee side of barrier island, receiving goods and masking dark back channel deals; hiding in cellars or in plain view.

In 2020, fans were able to gaze into the tea leaves that make up their brand new album: Lost Songs of Doc Souchon to see if they can discern their own destiny. Now, on the heals of the successful reunion album from SNZ members Jimbo Mathus, "13 Stories," "Lost Songs of Doc Souchon " is finally available on limited edition vinyl for RSD Black Friday 2021.

Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon follows the band’s last studio album, Beasts Of Burgundy, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Jazz Album Chart. Also, Andrew Bird makes his first appearance on a Squirrel Nut Zippers album since Perennial Favorites (1998, Mammoth)

“This new album was inspired by all of the mysterious characters from the history of New Orleans jazz music,” commented band leader Jimbo Mathus. “It speaks to the hidden roots of where our aesthetic, interests and philosophy comes from. It pulls on the hidden thread.”

Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon contains ten new tracks, a combination of newly written Zippers material, along with a few songs from past times.

The first single from the album “Animule Ball” was originally recorded back in 1938 by Jelly Roll Morton. In keeping with that time period, the band turned to Fleischer Studios (home of Betty Boop) to use some of their historic animations for a brand new video for the track.

“When I first started the Zippers the Max and Dave Fleischer cartoons were a huge part of our inspiration. The look, the music, all of it," commented Jimbo Mathus. "So to have their blessing to use some of these characters and create something new with it is thrilling to me.”

“Fleischer Studios has a long history of bringing together the best in music and animation, so the opportunity to continue that great tradition with a band like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, nearly 100 years after debuting the first sound cartoon in 1926, is a wonderful honor; and one that would surely put a smile on Max Fleischer's face,” commented Jeni Mahoney.

The Squirrel Nut Zippers began their musical journey in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid 1990’s, as a musician’s escape from the cookie cutter world of modern rock radio at the time. Jimbo Mathus along with drummer/percussionist Chris Phillips formed the band as a casual musical foray among friends and family in the area. It wasn’t long before the band’s quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music, and punk rock leanings spread out of the region and attracted a national audience.

Between 1995-2000 the Squirrel Nut Zippers sold over three million albums. Their watershed album, Hot (1996) was recorded in the heat of New Orleans, fueled by a smoldering mix of booze and a youthful hunger to unlock the secrets of old world jazz. This passion mixed with klezmer, blues and random bits of contemporary musical leanings became the bands signature style. At the time, there were few other bands inhabiting this space. The album would eventually break free of any “jazz” stereotypes and land on commercial radio, taking the band to remarkable heights for what was essentially an anti-establishment sound.

Willie Mae 'Big Mama" Thornton, is an American Blues legend known as the amazing voice behind the original "Hound Dog" and "Ball & Chain". She sadly passed away in 1984 at the young age of 57 after a hard life in the music business, having added a female voice to a field that was dominated by white males, and her strong personality transgressed stereotypes of what an African-American woman should be. This transgression was an integral part of her performance and stage persona.

Recorded live in 1977 at Montreal’s infamous Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club, this release was remastered for its first-ever vinyl release and includes her biggest songs plus unreleased material and a new cover painting by John Rummen.

It is impossible to overstate his importance to the history of reggae, representing a status as Louis Armstrong’s lasting influence on Jazz; U Roy’s feat of having the Top 3 best-selling singles at one time in 1970 on the airwaves & in record shops announced the beginning of a long recording and live performance career, known internationally as the ‘Rasta Ambassador’, a status he held until his death in February 2021. Quite simply, U Roy created the template for all those countless Mic MCs who followed his example, from the 1970s to now. Bob Marley was known to not be a fan of the DJ music sweeping the dance in Jamaica, but when asked what he thought of the trend replied “Well…me like U Roy.”

Pressed on clear vinyl (with liner notes by the noted reggae producer/historian Leroy Pierson), this compilation includes Roy’s collaborations with the leading vocalists of the day (including Johnnie Clarke, Lee Perry, The Heptones, Slim Smith and others), on his own, now-extremely rare JA-only 45 releases, from the collection on Sound System Records, Foundation Skank . There are also sides from an earlier release on Sound System (out of print on vinyl for 20 years) The Lost Album: Right Time Rockers, cited by the Rough Guide To Reggae as one of its 100 Essential LPs. Chatting as a master jazz scat-vocalist over the rhythms originally cut at the Channel One studio in Kingston for the all-time greatest LP of the vocal group Mighty Diamonds, they give an intimate look at the island’s #1 DJ at the top of his form.

By the time of his demise at the age of 78, every accolade, honor, and recognition given in the reggae world were abundantly his, including the Jamaican government’s highest commendation, The National Order Of Distinction. From the early days until his end, U Roy was the epitome of the Rastafarian message of black pride and love. His primacy in the forefront of reggae is known world-wide, and Sound System Records gives thanks for our two decades + association with the man known as Daddy Roy.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the U2 single “Gloria”, originally released as a single in October 1981, the second single to be taken from the second studio album October. It remains a staple in U2’s live set.

This 40th anniversary limited edition EP includes the studio version of “Gloria” plus three live versions from three different decades.

The 1990s are represented by the Point Depot show on the band’s home turf of northside Dublin (track A2). Although ticketed as 31st December 1989, the show started at midnight on 1st January 1990 and was broadcast across Europe at the time.

Side B contains two previously unreleased live recordings of “Gloria” – recorded at the Fleet Center in Boston during the Vertigo tour in 2005, and at London’s O2 Arena during the third night of their run of shows in the English capital as part of the iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour in 2015.

“Some of the artists represented on this compilation were forced into exile from Brazil as a result of sweet sounding songs like these. It is hard for us to imagine this music as being in any way dangerous, but the military regime that ruled Brazil during the late '60s and early '70s found it quite threatening. The combination of lyrics, the re-introduction of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and the electric guitars encouraged and inspired a whole generation in Brazil, much to the dismay of the government of the time. Maybe those songs are a more human form of political pop than our rabble rock epics which often sound too close to national anthems or marches for me. I first heard music like this years ago. I didn't 'get it' then, I couldn't hear it for what it was. Then, years later, I picked up a few LPs by Milton Nascimento and Caetano Veloso. I had no idea what was on them, I was buying blind, as I often do. I guess I was ready, because after that I became kind of obsessed, and every time I went to the record shop, I'd get a couple of Brazilian LPs. Some were great, real seductive ear openers, while others were not at all to my taste. But the gems far outweighed the garbage. The soundtrack includes several instrumental pieces by Australian composer Sven Libaek. Songs include original David Bowie recordings, Bowie covers by Seu Jorge, and two songs – "Search and Destroy" by The Stooges, and "Gut Feeling" by Devo, that had been produced or co-produced by Bowie. Although Anderson worked with Devo cofounder Mark Mothersbaugh for the soundtrack for this and all of his prior movies, this soundtrack marks the first time one of Devo's songs, "Gut Feeling," was used in a Wes Anderson film. Mothersbaugh's Devo bandmate Bob Casale (aka "Bob 2") co-produced the soundtrack with Mothersbaugh. Dave Van Ronk was one of the most important figures to emerge from the 1960s American music folk revival in the NYC Greenwich Village music scene. He befriended Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Joni Mitchell and countless others. His legendary life was the basis for the main character in the Coen brothers' film Inside Llewyn Davis.

This show was recorded at Indiana University in Bloomington on October 20, 1964, during a concert sponsored by the I.U. Folksong Club. The performance is quite intimate and eclectic in song choices. This single LP features the best eleven tracks from the 2015 double CD.
