The eighth historical release from archival imprint Real to Reel Records is an unreleased concert recording from baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams with the Tommy Banks Trio. Adams is best known for his work with John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd and countless other jazz legends. The 70-minute performance was recorded on September 25th, 1972 at the University of Alberta. Transferred from the original analogue tapes, the deluxe edition 180-gram double LP is mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearant Audio packaged in a gatefold sleeve. Includes an extensive booklet with rare photos; essays by Gary Carner, producer Cory Weeds; plus interviews with baritone saxophonists Frank Basile and Gary Smulyan as well as original music producer Marc Vasey. This is the first release from Vasey’s rich tape archive oin Edmonton, Alberta.

Long before becoming an icon of funk, acid jazz, and R&B, Roy Ayers was a promising young jazz vibraphonist. Originally released in 1967, Virgo Vibes was Ayers’ second album, and his debut for Atlantic. Blue Velvet is David Lynch’s unforgettable 1986 masterwork, starring Kyle MacLachlan as a curious college student, Isabella Rosselini as a tormented lounge singer, and Dennis Hopper as an emotional gas-sniffing psychopath. Blue Velvet was Lynch’s first collaboration with his longtime composer and musical partner, Angelo Badalamenti, who channels Lynch’s unique vision with a dark, moody, yet melodic score, at turns agitated and violent, soaring with sublime beauty, and hanging cool with ’50s-style jazz. The long available single LP has been expanded by 60 minutes to a 2 LP Deluxe Edition with the addition of the famous 1963 recording of “Blue Velvet,” performed by Bobby Vinton as well as previously unreleased film cues, alternates and outtakes entitled “Lumberton Firewood.” Although Blue Velvet was scored more traditionally than later Lynch projects, the director and composer intended many tracks to be merely “firewood,” their term for raw orchestral sonorities to be edited and manipulated into sound design by the director. The Deluxe Edition packaging features liner notes by Tim Greiving, incorporating new interviews with David Lynch, Angelo Badalamenti, Kyle MacLachlan, and producer Fred Caruso. Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe first rose to prominence as members of New Edition. With the group on hiatus in the late ‘80s, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis suggested the three branch out on their own, and Bell Biv DeVoe was formed. The group’s approach turned the tables – with R&B pulling from hip-hop rather than the other way around. In fact, Public Enemy producer Eric Sadler, along with Hank and Keith Shocklee, made significant contributions, helping Bell Biv Devoe craft their debut album, Poison. "Where are you, Jay Bennett?" is a feature-length documentary on Jay Bennett, a legendary musician who, as a member of Wilco, was a large part of the genius behind their three seminal albums (Being There, Summerteeth, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot -- he co-wrote most of Summerteeth and YHF with Jeff Tweedy) as well as the Mermaid Avenue/Woody Guthrie sessions with Billy Bragg, and who went on to a critically acclaimed solo career, before dying tragically at the age of 45

"Whatever Happened I Apologize" is best described by Brian Robbins of JamBands.com: "a departure from much of his past work. Simply put, the master of what-this-track-needs-is-one-more-weird-noise-and-it'll-be-perfect (and staunch defender of vinyl) has offered up a digital-only acoustic album much of it just the man, his guitar, and some pretty open emotions.”

"Kicking at the Perfumed Air" is a beautiful collection of personal songs that Jay Bennett was working on when he died. Released posthumously, the album was praised for its subtle beauty. Dave Brubeck Trio - Live from Vienna 1967 is an extremely rare, red-hot performance by Dave and his famous rhythm section -- Joe Morello, on drums, and Gene Wright on bass. Alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond, missed the plane to Vienna and the remaining trio took the stage with a mission; show the packed hall that the three of them could play up a storm despite being one man down. Each musician in the trio was at the top of their game and each player was forced to stretch out their solos which landed them in new creative territories. The communication of musical concepts between Dave and Joe is extraordinary as they improvise boldly and respond to each other's fresh ideas. Gene Wright solos far more than usual on this album and his playing is a fitting tribute to the longest living member of the Quartet. (Gene died on December 30th, 2020.) Dave Brubeck plays masterfully revealing a rhythmic complexity to his approach on the piano that is remarkable and reminds the listener of his extremely inventive approach to jazz improvisations. Harmonically, he also explores polytonality in the most unexpected places; for example, on the ballad "La Paloma Azul." On "Swanee River" Dave is playfully polyrhythmic. Dave's light touch on "One Moment Worth Years" is charming and gives a nod to the great more traditional pianists who went before him. On this great-sounding recording, you can hear the full breadth of Dave's playing which pushes jazz forward while honoring his past influences. Opening with "St. Louis Blues," the set includes the rhythmically challenging, high-spirited "Someday My Prince Will Come," and ends with "Take the A Train" as an encore. This is a thrilling set! The sound is wonderful and listening to this album will make you feel as if you were sitting in the audience that historic night.

The Catatonics were Syracuse and Central New York’s first hardcore punk band. They pioneered the original 1981/1982 Syracuse hardcore scene, and their classic Hunted Down EP is considered one of the first hardcore thrash/metal crossover releases, right up there with records from COC or DRI. In 1962, Karen summoned Richard Tucker to join her in Colorado, extolling the healthier lifestyle, and plentiful gigs at Boulder folk club The Attic. Upon his arrival, the pair solidified their personal and professional relationship, riding horses in the mountains, and performing as a duo at parties and venues throughout Denver and Boulder. Stories of the spell they conjured - and rumours of tapes! - have circulated among friends and musicians who witnessed them, but until now, no recorded evidence had turned up. Shuckin' Sugar is the glorious result of three reel to reel tapes that miraculously found their way to us in November 2018, which featured two complete shows from The Attic in January '63, and a benefit concert for The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) recorded the following February. Their gigs would often include brief solo sets from Karen and Richard, in addition to the duets, and all seven solo songs of Karen's found on the three reels are included here, as well as five duets, sequenced as close to how it all went down as humanly possible. To describe the record would take a poet, but all I can say is that unveiling a missing chapter in the Karen Dalton story - with six songs we've never heard her sing before - is cause for celebration in Delmore's world.

Kinked is a compilation of Dave Davies' work from the late '90s and early 2000s, featuring selections from the 1998 collection Unfinished Business: Dave Davies Kronikles 1963-1998, which itself contained a bunch of re-recordings from the late '90s of classic Kinks tunes. That accounts for a little under half of this 15-track collection. Gold Dust: Live At The Royalty, featuring highlights from Sandy Denny’s final concert, is making its debut on vinyl. Recorded just months before her untimely death in 1978, this special release attempts to present the record that Sandy might have released had she lived. The concert features a career-spanning set that includes songs taken from her band Fotheringay, Sandy’s solo albums (The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, Sandy, and Rendezvous), as well as her work with Fairport Convention on the albums Unhalfbricking and Rising for the Moon. Formed in 1976, Detective featured vocalist Michael Des Barres, guitarist Michael Monarch (Steppenwolf), bassist Bobby Pickett, ex-Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye, and drummer Jon Hyde. The band signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label and released their self-titled debut album a year later. Louisiana native John Fred was born in Baton Rouge and was a resident garage band leader in New Orleans throughout the 1960s. He and his Playboy Band are most well-known for his 1968 number 1 bubblegum pop rock single, "Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)."

The band recorded four albums for Paula Records during the late '60s. None of the albums have ever been re-released. The album that's named after the hit single is an underground psychedelic bubblegum pop album that is highly sought out by record collectors all over. None of their albums have ever been re-released on vinyl.

Dana Gillespie’s debut album, Foolish Seasons, is one of the great lost albums of 1960’s British pop. This very rare and sought-after 1968 album from the legendary British singer/songwriter was only released in the U.S. and over the years its reputation among collectors has only grown. Although it never came out in England, Decca Records kept the masters to the intended U.K. pressing which is now being released on vinyl. Betty Harris' The Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul collects together the steady stream of amazing soul and funk singles issued by Betty Harris from 1964 to 1969, under the musical guidance of legendary composer, musician, and producer extraordinaire Allen Toussaint, a collection that truly captures the heart and soul of the city of New Orleans during this era.

Betty Harris's powerful, fiery soulful vocals found a perfect accompaniment with the New Orleans' players that Toussaint put together to back her, which by the time of her funk classic 'There's A Break In The Road' were the legendary super-tight, super-funk New Orleans group The Meters.

With the extraordinary song-writing skills of Allen Toussaint alongside the powerful, soaring, confident and emotive singer and the groove of The Meters, you have an unbeatable combination. That Harris never, in fact, lived in New Orleans (she flew in from Florida for all her sessions with Toussaint's local in-house players) seems almost an irrelevance, a geographical aside to the defining New Orleans sound captured on the recordings featured here.

All of these singles featured here were released on Allen Toussaint and his business partner Marshal Sehorn's local New Orleans label Sansu, widely distributed in the southern city but in only limited quantities elsewhere. As a consequence, Betty Harris' music failed to achieve the commercial success of other New Orleans artists such as Lee Dorsey (whom she recorded with) and The Meters (who backed her). And so at the end of the decade, she stopped recording, retired from the music business to raise her family in Florida.

This is no reflection of the stunning musical quality of all these songs which encompass everything from southern soul, heavy funk, deep soul ballads and northern soul. Betty Harris has been a cornerstone of Soul Jazz Records' New Orleans Funk and New Orleans Soul compilations. Always soulful and always funky, Betty Harris' music contains the essence of New Orleans music. She is the Lost Soul Queen of New Orleans.

According to the liner notes, the UK jazz trio Jazz Sabbath were recording two albums in 1969 when disaster struck. Their debut album was cancelled, and their second album shelved; leaving room for a certain band from Birmingham becoming famous by playing metal versions of their jazz songs; claiming they were their own. Jazz Sabbath were powerless to do anything about it.

The discovery of their debut album master tapes and the following re-release of the album in 2020 has changed everything. With the truth finally out there and the Birmingham band exposed as musical charlatans, Milton Keanes and colleagues have reunited and finished recording their second album. "This 45 marks the label's 100th 45 and what better way to celebrate it than with a 45 from arguably our most prominent artist, Durand Jones & The Indications. This mix of "Power To The People" was the first new recording by the band after their self-titled album had been released. I distinctly remember hearing it for the first time and just feeling like we were hearing the next phase for the guys. I was behind the counter at Plaid Room, with my laptop plugged into the speakers so we could listen. There was no one in the store, just Bob and I. And when it finished playing Bob said, "Where can I pre-order?"

So what you're hearing on this 45 is the original demo mix that was sent to us, with little to no reverb on Durand's vocals, a marching band kick drum in the mix, and no synth. Knoxville's Judybats were a quintessential "college rock band," melding folk-rock influences filtered through an alt-rock sensibility (think REM) to quirky pop and lyrical smarts that bring to mind an American version of XTC. A.R. Kane was a British musical duo formed in 1986 by Alex Ayuli and Rudy Tambala. After releasing two early EPs to critical acclaim, the group topped the UK Independent Chart with their debut album 69 (1988). Their second album, "i" (1989), was also a top 10 hit. They were also part of the one-off collaboration MARRS, whose surprise dance hit "Pump Up the Volume" was released in 1987. "Americana" is a compilation of singles and rare tracks from earlier releases, presenting an overview of A.R. Kane's work bridging the New Wave and R'n'B genres. In true Stiff Records fashion, Jake Riviera (Stiff's founder) and Nick Lowe were looking for any opportunity to mess with music journalists ahead of the release of Nick's debut solo record. Jake and Nick had already learned that the album title, Jesus of Cool, would not be appropriate for the US release on Columbia; stateside it would be known as Pure Pop for Now People. Jake and Nick loved that the album would have two titles because it would lead to confusion. But then they thought "why stop at two titles?" Jake and Nick made it their goal to feed as many conflicting stories as possible to journalists, including giving fake album titles for Nick's debut to interviewers. This resulted in one paper "exclusively revealing" to readers that Nick's solo debut would be titled Wireless World. While Jesus of Cool and Pure Pop for Now People gave Nick his rightful place on the power pop plateau, the whispers of Wireless World faded away as mysteriously as they appeared. Now, for the first time ever, Wireless World is being issued on LP more than 40 years after first being reported.
