The concert recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in London on 26th March 1977, was one of the stand-outs from that memorable tour and it has been mixed by Stephen W. Tayler and is presented here on vinyl for the very first time. The recording reveals the improvisational side of Be Bop Deluxe, particularly on pieces such as “Shine” and “Blazing Apostles” which made each Be Bop Deluxe concert unique. Cut at Abbey Road Studios and pressed on white vinyl, this special Record Store Day limited edition release is a fitting tribute to a fine live band and the creative vision of Bill Nelson.

Art Blakey (1919–1990) actually needs little introduction. The American jazz drummer and bandleader made a name for himself in the 1940s and 1950s playing with contemporaries such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. He is often considered to have been Thelonious Monk's most empathetic drummer (he played on both Monk’s first recording session in 1947 and his final one in 1971). In the decades that followed Blakey recorded for all THE labels that mattered in the field of jazz (Columbia, Blue Note, Atlantic, RCA, Impulse!, Riverside, Prestige, Verve, etc.). His collaborations were numerous and include working with equally legendary artists such as Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Chet Baker, John Coltrane….and countless others.

Art Blakey was a major figure and a pioneer for modern jazz, he assumed an aggressive swing drumming style early on in his career and is known as one of the inventors of the modern bebop style of drumming. His signature polyrhythmic style was amazing, exuding power and originality, creating a dark cymbal sound punctuated by frequent loud snare and bass drum accents in triplets or cross-rhythms. A loud and domineering drummer…but Blakey also listened and responded to the others in the band. He was an original, an important drummer you’d hear…and would recognize immediately.

Art Blakey was inducted into the Downbeat Jazz Hall of Fame (1981), the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame (1991), the Grammy Hall of Fame (1998 and 2001) and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously in 2005. He was sampled and remixed by renowned acts such as Raekwon, Black Eyed Peas, A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Buscemi, KRS-One and Madlib.

In the mid-1950s he and Horace Silver formed ‘The Jazz Messengers’: a group that Blakey would perform and record with for the next 35 years. Originally formed as a collective of contemporaries…but over the years the band became known as an incubator for young talent that included artists such as Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, Chuck Mangione, John Hicks…and MANY others. Art Blakey went on to record dozens of albums with a constantly changing group of Jazz Messengers. Blakey's final performances were in July 1990. He died on October 16 of lung cancer. The legacy of Art Blakey and his band is not only the music they produced, but also the opportunities they provided for several generations of jazz musicians.
On the album we are presenting you today, you’ll find the eight sublime tracks recorded by renowned engineer Elvin Campbell at the CI Recording Studios (New York) in December 1977 that became known as the “In My Prime” sessions. These recordings were originally released on the legendary Dutch jazz label Timeless Records (and produced by its owner Wim Wigt) as two separate albums named Vol.1 & Vol.2.

As the leader of The Jazz Messengers (for over 22 years at the time of these recordings), drummer Art Blakey was still discovering new talent. In addition to altoist Bobby Watson (John Hicks, Charles Mingus), trumpeter Valery Ponomarev (Blue Note), bassist Dennis Irwin (Art Farmer), percussionist Ray Mantilla (Herbie Mann, Max Roach), Curtis Fuller (Quincy Jones, John Coltrane) on trombone and David Schnitter (Freddie Hubbard, Charles Earland) on tenor, this particular session also introduced the great pianist James Williams (Donald Byrd, Dizzy Gillespie) to the fold.

Despite the changes in musical fashions taking place at that particular period, Blakey and his hard-bop institution kept turning out new material and solos in the late 70s that still sound fresh, vibrant and alive today. The album showcases the Messengers’ energetic signature sound with remarkable style, musical knowledge, a dash of good humor and camaraderie you’d expect from a world class band and its leader. Expect supercharged hard bop with striking notes, no-holds-barred musicianship, high swinging solos, screaming choruses and plenty of solid virtuosity to spare. This release is not only a classic but also a bonafide hit and a must have for any self-respecting jazz fan or collector.

Paul Butterfield met aspiring blues guitarist Elvin Bishop in the early 1960s and with bassist Jerome Arnold and drummer Sam Lay (both from Howlin Wolf’s touring band), the new group secured a highly successful club engagement at Big John’s Folk Club in Chicago, bringing them to the attention of producer Paul A. Rothchild. During their engagement, Butterfield met and occasionally sat in with guitarist Mike Bloomfield. Rothchild was impressed with the chemistry between the two and having persuaded Paul to bring Bloomfield into the band, eventually signed them to Elektra Records in 1964. This Deluxe 3LP expanded edition of The Paul Butterfield Band’s lost sessions from the 1964-1966 era features the classic line-up working through blues classics. It is the first time this killer collection is available on vinyl and is expanded to include unreleased demo and alternate tracks recently found in the Warner Vaults.

In 1994, Southern alt-rockers Collective Soul became one of the biggest bands in the country with the release of their breakthrough self-titled album. Not long after, however, they would find themselves in a messy legal battle with their former manager. That difficult breakup is documented in their 1997 follow-up, Disciplined Breakdown. While the writing process helped the group overcome a challenging time, it also resulted in a best-selling album. This double LP release features one of Miles Davis’ final great bands: John Scofield on guitar, Bill “The Other Bill Evans” Evans on saxophones, flute and electric piano, Darryl Jones on bass, Al Foster on drums, and percussionist Mino Cinelu. Miles was back in amazing form (“incandescent and iridescent as ever,” critic Greg Tate noted), when he mounted the stage at the Theatre St-Denis during the Festival International De Jazz De Montreal in July 1983, and this revelatory performance has been lovingly mixed and mastered for its first ever release, on vinyl for Record Store Day 2022. (A CD will be part of the next edition of the Miles Davis Bootleg Series, focusing on the 1981-1985 period, later in the year.)

What It Is includes tracks from that year’s release Star People, the Marcus Miller tune “Hopscotch” and the song “Jean-Pierre” that appeared on 1982’s We Want Miles. The recordings of “What It Is” and “That’s What Happened” were so well thought of by Miles that he utilized them for his 1984 release Decoy, but in heavily edited form and this release would include the first release of them in complete form. Packaged in beautiful gatefold packaging, the album features liner notes penned by the incomparable music journalist Greg Tate and represent some of his final writing.

Beginning in the mid-’60s, musicians were filling the clubs with an irresistible combination of soul, R&B, and Afro-Cuban dance rhythms. By the turn of the decade, the style – known as “boogaloo” – had evolved, often integrating socially-conscious lyricism (in both English and Spanish), rock and funk influences, and a heavy dose of psychedelia. That sound is captured in Flash & The Dynamics’ The New York Sound, a 1971 rarity from the Fania Records vaults. Recorded at the Hammersmith Apollo, London, 23 & 24 March 2011 and originally released the following year, Live Blood is exactly what its name suggests – the live incarnation of Peter Gabriel’s New Blood project where he reworked a chunk of his back catalogue for a 46-piece orchestra.

“I was determined that it shouldn’t be just a sort of ‘Hits goes to the Orchestra’. So we did two things different: one was to try to choose songs that were more textural, more journey songs, more evocative, ambient pieces and less the obviously structured pop songs, and the second thing we did was, we threw away the rock band; most people when they do orchestral projects keep the rock band and add orchestra, but we took away guitar, we took away bass, we took away drum kit, and in a way that meant that we were more committed and had only to use the colours of the palette of the orchestra.”

The album has been Half-Speed Remastered and cut to lacquers at 33RPM, across 3x heavyweight LPs, pressed on blood red vinyl.

Vinyl cut by Matt Colton at Metropolis Mastering and overseen by Peter’s main sound engineer Richard Chappell. The album comes in a gatefold sleeve with full colour printed inner bags and a download card with a choice of digital download (Hi-Res 24bit or 16bit).

Bobby Hamilton founded the band Anubis in Syracuse, NY and they put out their awesome “Ecology” single on Charles Bazen’s Salt City imprint. It’s a highlight on the 2012 Soul-Cal anthology Now-Again,something akin to Terry Callier and Gil Scott Heron’s most soulful works.

Shortly after issuing that single, Bobby put together the Bobby Hamilton Quintet Unlimited and recorded and issued Dream Queen in 1972. The last clean copy Bobby Hamilton had, he sold to the musician Jamie XX in 2021 for a princely sum.

Few originals will ever surface again – its original run of 500 units having disappeared into the ether decades ago. This is your chance to hear a masterwork of deep, spiritual jazz lacquered directly from its original master tape in an all analog transfer by the legendary Bernie Grundman. Cecil Johnson Lyde Holden aka “Home Boy” (born 1948) is an artist whose musical talent has been unmistakable since his days as a young boy. Growing up listening to his parents 78 RPM Doo-wop, Blues, Jazz and Gospel records, he started singing in church when he was six years old. At 10, his mother took him to the Club DeLisa (Chicago’s celebrated night spot) and entered him in a talent contest where he won first prize singing “Only You” by The Platters. This key event had sparked a burning desire and a love for music in Cecil that would never leave him…it created an opportunity for him to become an entertainer and recording artist.

Flash forward to the 1960s when he met Mr. Otis Leavill, one of the leading figures in the Chicago Soul scene. Leavill was already an established recording artist, producer, recording studio co-owner and talent scout (he discovered Yvette Stevens, aka ‘Chaka Khan’). Guided by his now mentor, Cecil was exposed to professional studio recording work and productions. He began to work with Otis’ roster of artists, developing his own songwriting skills and musical style in the process. Later he started working with many of Chicago's great musical talents of the time: Curtis Mayfield, The Chi-Lites, Major Lance, Gene Chandler, Barbara Acklin…and countless others. Cecil Lyde helped recording songs for Chess, Brunswick and St. Lawrence Records. Sadly, by the early 1970’s Chicago’s famous “Record Row” (the area where all the independent record companies were located) started to close down and as a result many bands broke up.

Not discouraged by the closing of “Record Row”, Cecil and some of his childhood singing buddies (under the name of Experience II) landed a production deal and found themselves signed to Capitol Records in 1973. The single “Bout Time I Told You Baby” was well received and became a hit. Later on Cecil Lyde, Bruce Fisher and Rick Giles formed the group Lyde, Fisher & Giles (aka ‘Stone Free) who released a privately pressed (and now very rare) promo 7inch titled ‘Serve Me Right To Suffer’…but before the band could fully materialize, Bruce Fisher left the group and went on to write songs for Quincy Jones and Bernard Purdie. Rick Giles also went his separate way to write hits for Earth, Wind & Fire.

As a result of all these tumultuous Chicago events, Cecil was convinced he needed to take the next step and make the move to Los Angeles. It was here that he recorded/produced his first solo album "Stone Free" (1980) and put the genius of many of LA’s finest session players to good use on his two magnus-opus recordings “Home Boy And The C.O.L. (the cost of living)” and “Out Break” (released in 1982 and 1984 respectively).

Looking for a new direction in the mid 1980’s, Cecil moved on to radio and music promotion/marketing. The rise of the internet brought more exposure and much overdue appreciation for Cecil Lyde’s story. Audiences from Beijing to the UK have now discovered his unique style and his albums are now highly priced collectables, searched for by fans and collectors around the globe.

The album we are proudly presenting you today (Home Boy And The C.O.L.) is Cecil Lyde’s self-titled debut under the ‘Home Boy’ name and was released in 1982 on his own label Alwest Records. The whole album is backed by a fantastic cast of all-star players that includes John Stephens (Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder), Fred Brown (Gwen McCrae), Rommel Sinclair (Fred Wesley), Gary Bell (Lionel Hampton), Carl Lockett (Pharoah Sanders, Chuck Mangione) and Terry Carter (Swamp Dogg).

These recordings (ten songs in total) are particularly interesting to boogie-enthusiasts because of their high doses of funky twerks, solid grooves, crazy synth work, excellent drumbeats and Cecil’s soulful Doo-wap influenced vocals. In the summer of 1970, Linda Hoover, then 19, entered Manhattan’s Advantage Sound Studio to cut her first album with Gary Katz, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen leading a team that also included guitarists (and future Steely Dan members) Denny Dias & Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, and Eric Weissberg, saxophonist Jerome Richardson, plus members of the Dick Cavett Orchestra.

I Mean To Shine includes three original compositions by Linda alongside The Band’s “In A Station” (from Music From Big Pink) and Stephen Stills’ “4+20” (which appeared on CSN&Y’s Déjà Vu). Almost half of the album was penned by the pre-Steely Dan songwriting duo of Becker and Fagen, including what would become the album’s title track. After creating a wonderful record, album cover photos were taken and then it all fell apart.

The release was shelved over a business disagreement and if that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Hoover learned that Barbra Streisand also recorded “I Mean To Shine” (which would appear on her album Barbra Joan Streisand). Streisand’s album hit #11 and went gold. For the production team of Katz, Becker, and Fagen one success built on another and they were hired to staff positions at ABC-Dunhill Records in Los Angeles.

Hoover continued to pursue musical opportunities in New York, but with her creative team gone and no record release to show for their collective efforts, she wound up returning to her parents’ house in Florida. However, she did take a tape copy of her album home with her.

Now, with the blessing from Hoover and original producer Katz, the previously unissued album, I Mean To Shine finally sees the light of day and even features the proposed 1970 cover shot by Joel Brodsky (whose work at that time had already graced the covers of releases from The Doors, Van Morrison, The Stooges, and more). The album has been produced for release by Linda, Jay Willingham, and Grammy®-winner Cheryl Pawelski with audio restoration and mastering by Grammy®-winning engineer Michael Graves. Scott Schinder’s liner notes are informed by new interviews with Hoover and Katz.

First-ever release of cult Freddie Hubbard live performance recorded in 1973 at Maison De La Radio (ORTF) in Paris. Released in collaboration with Duane Hubbard and French Institut National De L'audiovisuel (INA), the double-LP set has been remastered for vinyl from the original tapes and comes in a gatefold sleeve including liner notes by Kevin Le Gendre. A mesmerizing live performance by Freddie Hubbard and his quintet recorded in Paris at Maison de la Radio (ORTF) on March 25, 1973. Featuring Hubbard with George Cables on Fender Rhodes, Junior Cook on sax/flute, Kent Brinkley on bass, and Michael Carvin on drums, the group interprets four Hubbard classics in deep, spiritual mode. The tapes of the concert were transferred at INA's studios and remastered for vinyl by Colorsound Studio. 1973 was a special year for Freddie Hubbard. He had been one of jazz's brightest young stars for more than a decade and had also recorded as a sideman for such luminaries as John Coltrane, Art Blakey, and Ornette Coleman. After a spell at Blue Note and Atlantic Records, Hubbard signed to CTI records in 1970. Launched by Creed Taylor, CTI was the up-and-coming jazz label at the time, aiming at the pop market with their trademark blend of fusion jazz and highly stylized album covers. There, Hubbard recorded five highly successful studio albums further cementing is reputation as a jazz superstar. In early 1973, after years of working with the cream of the CTI stable of musicians for his albums and concerts (including Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, George Benson, Herbie Hancock), Hubbard decided to put together a new quintet consisting of Junior Cook on sax, Kent Brinkley on bass, plus two young Turks from the thriving post-bop jazz scene: pianist George Cables -- who'd cut his teeth with Woody Shawand Joe Henderson -- and drummer Michael Carvin who'd played with Doug Carn and Henry Franklin on their Black Jazz albums (the following year, Carvin would appear on Pharoah Sanders's Impulse album Elevation and on Cecil McBee's Mutima on Strata East). The quintet, save Carvin, would record Hubbard's Keep Your Soul Together for CTI later that year (his last album for the label) but for the time being, the quintet was busy touring and they all left for Europe to hone their skills as a tight unit. The music they created during that tour, as showcased on this live performance recorded in Paris, is nothing but extraordinary and unlike anything Hubbard had recorded for CTI.  The musicians are heard here playing four recent Hubbard classics: "Sky Dive", "The Intrepid Fox", "Povo" and "First Light" in a very different style: the music here is deep and organic, retaining the quintessence of the four beautiful melodies and stretching them in long, spiritual work outs. The concert which was filmed by French TV in beautiful black-and-white by Marc Pavaux and legendary DoP Willy Kurant is a vivid testimony of the musicians' togetherness, caught in full flight on this performance and taking the music to higher grounds. Jazz guitarist Calvin Keys is a legend among soul-jazz-funk fans for both his work as a session/ touring musician and for the catalog of classic releases under his own name. Key’s playing style is lean and muscular, and his unique phrasing balances sophisticated jazz harmonics with funky R&B and soul grooves. Since the 1960s Calvin Keys has performed/recorded with renowned artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Ray Charles, Pharoah Sanders and Joe Henderson. He is also a mentor to young talent, offers private lessons, and is a frequent teacher at the yearly happening ‘Jazz Camp West’.

Calvin Keys was born in 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska. His first musical influence was his father Otis, a well-known drummer in the city's music scene…he passed the music bug on to Calvin, who picked up the guitar early. Keys landed his first notable gig as a member of Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson's band when he was 17 and then went on to play with Preston Love (of the Count Basie Orchestra). Later on, he would also join The Jimmy Smith Trio and then worked through the rest of the 1960s with legends such as Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes and Brother Jack McDuff.

After moving to Los Angeles in the 1970s, he signed to Gene Russell's now-legendary Black Jazz label where he cut his first two albums: Shawn-Neeq (1971) and Proceed with Caution (1974). Next to his own output on Black Jazz Records, Calvin Keys also did session work for the label and played on several of its hit records. At this point in time Keys also auditioned for the Ray Charles Orchestra…his unique phrasing and his ability to balance sophisticated jazz harmonics with tough R&B and soul grooves were showcased nightly in Charles’ band. Before relocating to San Francisco in 1975, he also played on Billy Brooks' jazz-funk classic ‘Windows of the Mind’ (1974) and focused on more live and session work. Keys then joined Ahmad Jamal's group and spent close to a decade with the pianist, touring the globe and recording six albums with him.
The 1980’s and 1990’s also proved similarly fruitful for Calvin Keys…he was a ‘first-call’ studio & live sideman and amassed massive credits for touring with all-stars from the likes of Tony Bennett, Pharoah Sanders and Sonny Stitt. He released two more fantastic solo albums: Full Court Press (1985) & Maria’s First (1985), this time on Olive Branch Records. In 1991 he was featured on the recordings for the original score of the film ‘Dying Young’ composed by James Newton Howard. Next to all of this, his session and live work with his own trio continued at a relentless pace. He settled down in the Bay area and played a multitude of gigs throughout the 1990’s.

After being sidelined in 1997 by heart surgery, Calvin Keys entered the new millennium with a bang! He released five widely acclaimed Jazz-charting albums and worked with major players from the likes of Taj Mahal (Santana, Miles Davis), Chester Thompson (Tower Of Power), Big John Patton (Blue Note), Phil Ranelin (Tribe), Sonny Fortune (Roy Ayers, Strata East), Buell Neidlinger (Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones), Peter Erskine (Joni Mitchell, Weather Report) and Lonnie Smith. There’s no such thing as ‘slowing down’ for Mr. Keys!

On Full Court Press, you’ll find seven sublime tracks recorded in 1984 and released in 1985 on the Olive Branch label. This was Calvin Keys’ first solo album since his recordings for Black Jazz Records back in the 1970’s. Linda Martell was the first African-American woman to make the country charts and to appear at the Grand Ole Opry, and helped lay the groundwork for future artists of color in the genre. Despite multiple TV appearances, a dozen appearances at the Opry, and some big hits - including "Color Him Father", "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and "Bad Case of the Blues" - her 1970 debut album, Color Me Country, would also be her last. The Gold Experience was the first full-length Prince album to be credited to his unpronounceable symbol, and was released at the most public, heated stage of his battle with the major label industrial complex. With the word “SLAVE” written on one cheek, Prince shined on the opulent ballads “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” and “Gold” and the defiant single “Eye Hate U,” and the album earned widespread critical acclaim.

The opening track on 1972's Super Freak is a brilliant, nearly side-long medley of three tracks from Curtis Mayfield's Superfly: the title track, "Pusherman," and, of course, "Freddie's Dead." Heavy, druggy, and psychedelic, with thick organ and wah-wah guitars, the medley sounds more like the psychedelic soul of War or even Funkadelic than the sparkling Latin jazz of Pucho's earlier albums.

The rest of Super Freak is a little lighter in tone, but this is still the most groove-oriented and least overtly Latin jazz-oriented of this group's albums, trafficking instead in shuffling grooves like "Oak Hurst's Art" and vibes-led ballads like "Judy's Moods" and "One More Day." Latin jazz purists may balk, but this later became a classic of the '90s acid jazz movement, which some sources date to the U.K. hip-hop group Galliano pinching a sample from this album's version of "Freddie's Dead" for the 1989 single "Frederick Lies Still." -AllMusic

The Rationals are one of the cornerstone bands of Detroit’s ever-storied rock history. Artists such as Bob Seger, Ted Nugent and Brownsville Station were influenced by The Rationals. Coming out of Ann Arbor in 1964, The Rationals gave an authentic R&B twist to the new rock ‘n roll styles of the British Invasion. They broke through on Jeep Holland’s A2 label in 1965 and found a hit with a cover of Otis Redding’s “Respect” on the Cameo Parkway label in 1966—reaching a spot on the Billboard Hot 100. By 1967 The Rationals were firmly embedded in the Detroit music scene alongside such contemporaries as MC5, The Stooges, Bob Seger System and the Amboy Dukes. They were frequently featured on bills at the legendary Grande Ballroom, and acted as supporting act for Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Pink Floyd around the Detroit area. Their sole studio LP was self-titled and released by Crewe Records in 1970. Their matured sound included touches of soul, hard rock, psychedelia, and the blues which spawned originals like “Guitar Army,” and showcased their soulful talents on covers such as “Temptation ‘Bout To Get Me”.

This Record Store Day 2022 reissue of the 1970 LP has been newly remastered and pressed on orange and yellow splatter vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit.

Raw and unsophisticated, and deeply experimental with regards the studio material, all three recordings shine a light onto the group’s early, intrauterine period, capturing them performing together, and represents an invaluable part of their formative story.

Part of the band’s ongoing pREServed series, providing an accompaniment to a collection of vinyl reissues of their better known 1970s recordings, ‘Warning: Uninc’ bears little relation to the rest of recorded music history, a pattern The Residents have continued over the 50 years since these recordings were made.

Song Confessional is a songwriting project started by Austin musicians Walker Lukens, Zac Catanzaro and Jim Eno (Spoon) that collects anonymous stories to share with songwriters who write and record original songs inspired by them.

Originally conceived as a festival activation, Song Confessional has traveled all over the country recording anonymous stories at SXSW, Luck Reunion, Newport Folk Fest, Trans Pecos, Artsplosure, and has produced songs for Houndmouth, !!!, Kat Edmonson, David Ramirez and Wild Child whose song "Going In" has over 8.3M plays on Spotify in the last year.

In addition to releasing the songs digitally, the project features some of the songs on its Podcast, Song Confessional, where you hear the anonymous story, the song it inspired, and an interview with the songwriters who wrote it. Distributed by NPR-affiliate station KUTX, the podcast has already built a decent following with 450k monthly listeners on Spotify.

Partnering with the Bunkhouse Hotel group, Song Confessional has installed a permanent 24-hr confessional booth at Hotel Magdalena. Anyone can go record themselves telling their story for a chance to be part of the Song Confessional Project.

Eldee Young and Redd Holt were former members of the Ramsey Lewis Trio. In 1966 they started up the Young-Holt Unlimited, establishing themselves as one of the best-known instrumental groups mixing jazz and R&B into songs that captured the essence of the late '60s and early ‘70s. The group are best known for their 1968 Top 10 hit "Soulful Strut" and recorded nine albums over their career. This 1973 album captures many the soul hits of the moments. This nine-track set is a crate digger and DJ's delight, with classic period packaging capturing the Blaxploitation film sounds and style of the time.
