You know Spencer's Gifts is psyched about this one. (Does Spencer's Gifts still even exist? We haven't been to the mall in ages.) The Des Moines nonet's new masks should get tees flying off the racks; hell, if we were Spencer's CEO we'd be ordering foam replicas of those damn things in bulk. But this is all old news; Slipknot have always boasted a strong, iconic visual presence. Here's the bonus (and the point): The new tunes are fierce enough to justify the fanfare. The title track in particular is a no-B.S. thrash assault that (naturally) flaunts the boys' brilliant percussive teamwork. And while we're happy that frontman Corey Taylor has an outlet for decompression in the form of Stone Sour, he excels as the polysyllabic, frothing leader of this pack of wild animals. The only question is how Hope will play in a world that frowns upon even the vestiges of nu-metal.
