Edhem Eldem est professeur au departement d'histoire de l'universite de Bog?azici a Istanbul, il a aussi enseigne a Berkeley, Harvard, Columbia, a l'EHESS, a l'EPHE, a l'ENS et a ete titulaire de la chaire internationale d'histoire turque et ottomane au College de France. Dans cette conference, il retrace l'histoire de l'Empire ottoman depuis son apparition au XIVe siecle a sa chute au lendemain de la Premiere Guerre mondiale. Des son emergence, cet empire est confronte aux defis de son gigantisme et de sa diversite ethnique et culturelle. En se detachant des prismes de l'orientalisme et du nationalisme, l'auteur nous livre les cles essentielles pour comprendre la complexite de cet empire unique, mettant en lumiere les dynamiques internes qui ont marque son parcours a travers les siecles.Claude COLOMBINI FReMEAUX Edhem Eldem is Professor in the Department of History at Bogazici University in Istanbul.
