Arthur and Gerrie Mason are having a hard time being the parents of teenagers. In one evening, they discover their 16-year-old daughter, Maxie, is using LSD, and they kick their 17-year-old son, Artie, out of the house for (possibly) being his sister's supplier. Arthur runs to his stable neighbor, who seems to have everything together, for advice, unaware that the neighbor is suffering from troubles himself: his wife is an alcoholic and his son has his own problems.
