Reviews:

Whether it’s the result of, as he claims, post-9/11 introspection or simplytoo much acid dropped, Tiamat mastermind Johan Edlund has certainly grown lessbitter with his band’s seventh LP Judas Christ. Still, the Swedishtrio’s basic atmospheric rock template remains unchanged. Edlund’sstrangely sensual voice stays cool as ice on “Vote For Love,” an anthemicexplosion of goth rock pomp and doom metal crunch that’s got to be thebest Sisters of Mercy song since Floodland. No real surprise then thatJudas Christ was recorded at the same Puk Studios that Andrew Eldritchand company tracked their Vision Thing LP over a decade ago. And likethe Sisters’ good-bye kiss, Judas’ middle tends to lag a bit. However,Edlund compensates with the closing pair of “Heaven on High” and “TooFar Gone,” which could have easily been written by Elliott Smith and Cracker’sDavid Lowery, respectively. Fine company for a guy who used to call himselfHellslaughter.
