América Based on the acclaimed novel, this harrowing drama centers on a young woman's quest to escape her troubled past and start a new life in America. While the setting of her remote Caribbean village seems picture-perfect, America Gonzalez's life is far from peaceful. When her abusive boyfriend takes away her daughter, she runs away from her island home to build a life in New York City. There, she works tirelessly as a nanny during the day, and in a Laundromat throughout the night. Nevertheless, she is determined to bring her daughter back to her. But America cannot escape her past and she must confront her worst fears in order to protect her new dream. Lymari Nadal ("American Gangster") stars at the titular heroine and the supporting cast includes Academy Award-nominee Edward James Olmos ("Stand and Deliver," TV's "Battlestar Galactica,"), Rachel Ticotin ("Man on Fire," "Total Recall") and Tony Plana (TV's "Ugly Betty"). Directed by Sonia Fritz, the film is a moving portrait of old lives and new and a frank look at the realities of the American Dream. In Spanish with English subtitles.
